The University of Southern Mississippi, Department of Anthropology and
Sociology, seeks a one-year visiting instructor/assistant professor
beginning August 1995, specializing in linguistic anthropology/applied
linguistics.  Desirable topical specialties include language and culture,
sociolinguistics, and language planning, with secondary interests in
psychological anthropology and/or the anthropology of religion.
Preference will be given to someone with a geographic focus in North
America, Circum-Mediterranean or East Asia.  The successful applicant will
be expected to teach a five-field introductory course, Introduction to
Cultural Anthropology, and undergraduate and graduate courses in his/her
specialty.  Teaching load is nine hours per semester.  Send letter of
application, curriculum vitae, and letters from three references to James
G Flanagan, Chair, Anthropology and Sociology, Box 5074, University of
Southern Mississippi, Hattiesburg, MS  39406-5074.  Applications should be

The UCLA Department of Linguistics expects to have two jobs for next year
teaching African languages. One job involves teaching Zulu and the other
involves teaching Swahili.
 
(1) Zulu
The UCLA Department of Linguistics invites applications for an
anticipated full-time position as Lecturer to teach courses in Zulu,
pending final authorization of funding. The successful candidate
will teach courses in elementary, intermediate, and advanced Zulu.
Applicants should have native or near-native command of Zulu.
Prior experience teaching Zulu is required. Ph.D. is preferred.
 
(2) Swahili
The UCLA Department of Linguistics invites applications for an
anticipated half-time or two-thirds time position as Lecturer to teach
courses in Swahili. The successful candidate will teach courses in
Swahili at various levels. (The precise course load depends on whether
the appointment is .5 or .67 FTE.) Applicants should have native or
near-native command of Swahili. Prior experience in teaching Swahili is
required. Ph.D. is preferred.

The UCLA Department of Linguistics expects to have four or five short-term
jobs available teaching individual courses next year. Most of the  courses
to be taught are undergraduate courses, including courses in the following
areas: (1) Phonetics    (1996 Winter quarter -- January-March)
       (2) Syntax;      (1996 Winter quarter -- January-March)
       (3) Semantics.   (1995 Fall quarter -- Late September - Mid-December)
Other courses might include a general introductory course or a graduate-
level course in any area of theoretical linguistics, including (in addition
to those listed above) Computational Linguistics or Phonology.
 
It is possible that we will hire a different instructor for each course,
but it is also possible that we will hire one or two people to teach
two or more courses each, either during a single quarter or running over
two quarters.
 
Each course runs for ten weeks (with two 2-hour lectures per week) followed
by an exam week. The pay for each course is between $7,000 and $10,000,
depending on available funding and level of appointment.
