Does anyone have information, or can they direct me to sources,
concerning the borrowing of vowel systems between languages? More
particularly, I would be interested in examples of a five vowel
language adopting a seven, or nine vowel system from a neighbour.

Thanks.

Dear Linguists,
Would you help my collegue judge the sentences including the phrase _had
better_ by your native speaker's intuition? Below are his two queries:
**********************************************************************
I am working on a paper on the use of _had better_. i have two quries
to ask.

A. I would like to know whether the following sentences are acceptable
   or not.
    (1) You _hadn't better_ stay here tonight.
    (2) You _had not better_ stay here tonight.
    (3) A: i promise I'll pay you back. B: You _better had_.

B: I know that _had better_ sometimes takes an inanimate subject. I would
be grateful if you would give me a few sentences using _It_ (or _This_)
_had_ _better_...
*************************************************************************
Thakns a lot in advance. Please answer me directly.
