The University of Umea, Sweden, has a vacancy in Phonetics from the
1st of January 1996 for the position of research engineer.

Phonetics is the scientific study of human speech, pronunciation and
communication. It is cross-disciplinary with connections to pedagogy,
psychology, medicine, physics and computer science amongst others. At
the centre of the teaching and research in the area is the phonetics
laboratory. The laboratory in Umea has recently been re-constructed
and modernised to a high international standard. A recent large
donation has made it possible for us to plan further developments of
our technically advanced laboratory for both teaching and
research. Research is conducted in a variety of funded projects which
include research into different aspects of speech rhythm, intonation
and sound. Speech is analysed with the help of computers and signal
processing packages. The laboratory primarily uses SUN Sparcstations
in a Unix environment.

Do you want to:

* be responsible for the everyday running, maintenance and
  development of the phonetic laboratory

* take part and help develop courses at undergraduate and postgraduate level

* participate in research?

Do you have:

* a university degree which includes computer science, electronics and
  signal processing

* experience of network and system administration, in particular Solaris 2.x

* competence and experience of programming in C in a variety of
  environments, especially UNIX

* experience of analog recording techniques and recording studio equipment

* an aptitude for expressing yourself in spoken and written language
and a general interest in language and speech

* the ability to independently structure and document your work?

Are you a gregarious character who is creative, can show initiative
and has a high degree of responsibility?

If you meet most of the above criteria we can offer you
a stimulating, flexible and varying working environment which
presents the opportunity for personal development and allows you
to partake in the development of the laboratory in an
inter-disciplinary environment.
