Dear Friends,

It is with great sadness that I learnt today from Norway of the passing of
Dr. Otto Christian Dahl, who devoted most of his missionary life to
Madagascar and to the promotion of the Malagasy language.

His work includes the following:

Dahl, Otto Christian - "Le systeme phonologique du proto-malgache"
in Norsk Tidskrift for Sprovigdenskap, tome 10, Oslo, Norway,
         1938, pp 189-235.

Dahl, Otto Christian - "Etude de phonologie et de phonetique
malgache" in Norsk Tidskrift for Sprovigdenskap, XVI, Oslo,
        Norway1951a. pp 148-200.

Dahl, Otto Christian - Malgache et Maanjan. Egede Instituttet, Oslo,
        Norway.1951b, 408 pages.

Dahl, Otto Christian - Contes malgaches en dialecte sakalava (textes,
traductions, grammaire et lexique). Oslo, Norway:
        Universitetsforlaget, VIII-124 pages, bibliography. Instituttet
for sammenlignende Kulturforsking, Serie B. Skrifter. LIV.
        1968.

Dr. Otto Chr. Dahl had a perfect command of several dialects of Malagasy
(in particular, the Sakalava and the Merina dialects). He spoke Malagasy
not just with ease but just like a native speaker, a level of linguistic
attainment I have never seen in a foreigner. He and his family, among other
things, have contributed significantly to the promotion of the Malagasy
language worldwide.

He will be sorely missed.
