                           GMD-KONTEXT,
        the Natural Language Research and Development Unit of
        The German National Centre for Information Technology
                        Darmstadt, Germany

invites applications for a graduate position in the KONTEXT text
analysis project.

In this project (http://www.darmstadt.gmd.de/KONTEXT/kontext.html) a
text analysis system is being developed which generates a formal
representation ot text content and text structure. The representation
is definede by the KONTEXT text model and can be regarded as a text
representation or as an extended knowledge representation.  It serves
for an improved electronic processing of textually communicated
information.  The Ph.D. candidate's task will be to work on an
improvement of the anaphora and reference resolution component.

Applicants should have
-       a degree in computer science and/or computational
        linguistics
-       expertise in at least one of the following areas:
        -       semantic theories (in areas such as quantification,
		modal semantics, temporal semantics, lexical semantics)
        -       formal logic
        -       text analysis or text generation or machine translation
        -       text analysis
-       programming experience in LISP or Prolog or C++ or C.
-	expertise in UNIX

Fluent command of written and spoken German is required.

A flat rate for doctorate positions will be paid.

Job Description:

- Define subsets of English (vocabulary and syntax) for use in
technical documentation.  These subsets will be used to create simple,
consistent English documents that can be translated into other
languages with minimum effort.

- Coordinate between an outside contractor assisting with lanuage
definition and checking tools, internal authoring groups, and an
external translation agency.

- Help train authors on the use of the checking tools required to
enforce the restricted language set.

Required Skill set:

- Background in lexicography or lexically-oriented linguistics

- Industry or practical experience with delivering a developed
lexical product [production oriented rather than research
oriented]

- Experience in coordinating requirements from multiple diverse groups

- Experience in corpus-based linguistic analysis for English

- High-level of comfort with interactive computing environment

- Simple C programming

- High personal productivity

- Superior verbal and written communication skills

Desirable skill set

 o Experience with one or more of the following languages:

   Spanish
   Arabic
   Russian
   French Canadian
   Portuguese
   Greek
   Simplified Chinese
   German

 o Computational linguistics
 o Substantial C programming language
 o Development and delivery of training courses

Education/Experience

 - M.S. in linguistics or language-related field

 - 2 to 3 years relevant experience, including some with
lexical orientation, or equivalent

Two Open Rank Tenure Track Positions Available at the Graduate Institute of
Linguistics National Chung Cheng University

The Graduate Institute of Linguistics at National Chung Cheng
University in Chia-yi, Taiwan has two open rank tenure track positions
available starting August 1, 1996. One position is for a computational
linguist with a strong background in formal syntax/semantics. The
other position is for a phonetician with a strong background in at
least one of the following areas: phonology, morphology, cognitive
psychology, or historical linguistics.  Candidates with solid research
records in Chinese linguistics are preferred.  Candidates must have a
Ph.D. in hand by June 1996 in order to be appointed to either of the
above positions by August 1, 1996. Salary will be commensurate with
rank and experience. The annual salary is about NT $650,000 for a
first year assistant professor, NT $900,000 for a first year associate
professor, and NT $1,100,000 for a first year full professor. (US
$1.00 is approximately NT $27.00; previous teaching and research
experience can be counted toward the salary scale in all of the three
ranks). Please send a letter of application, along with a C.V., a
statement of research goals, three letters of recommendation and
