                    ZHONGHUA SCHOLARSHIP 1996

       SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION AND APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Introduction:

     ZHONGHUA SCHOLARSHIP is jointly established by the Cross-
Culture Education Center of Washington (WCCEC) and educational
institutions in China. As a cross-cultural education program, it
offers an opportunity for all those who are interested in Chinese
language, linguistics, culture, history, and all other China-
related issues to study in China, live in China, and be "part of
China".
     Each year, one or more institutions in China and WCCEC in
Washington, D.C. will jointly offer a limited number of
scholarships (about 10 total) to native speakers of English
(including those from Britain and Australia, and New Zealand).
WCCEC is responsible for making recommendations and for
conducting the orientation program, as well as for all travel
arrangements. The hosting institution in China makes the final
decision based on the recommendations from WCCEC. The benefits
and responsibilities for the recipients every time may vary
slightly depending on the institution in China.

Benefits and Responsibilities:

     There will be two programs for the year 1996, the one-year
program, known as Program A, and the one-semester program, known
as Program B. Recipients in both programs are provided with:

     (1) international travel expenses;
     (2) accommodation in China;
     (3) medical insurance;
     (4) a monthly stipend to cover food and other expenses.

     To promote acculturation through daily participation in
local activities, each recipient will be provided with a personal
tutor with whom to share each other's cultural and linguistic
insights.
     As part of the cultural exchange program, each recipient
will be required to attend Chinese classes and to teach some
English class (between 12 to 15 class hours per week) to K-12
students.
     For participants in Program A, a cultural tour to visit
other places in China (with all expenses covered except meals)
will be arranged at the end of the year.

Sponsorship:

     For programs in 1996, the hosting institutions are all in
Guangdong Province. Specific information will be provided for
applicants who are short-listed.

Application:

(1) Cover letter highlighting your strength;
(2) Background Information Form (attached), filled in and signed;
(3) Resume (with phone/fax numbers and email if available);
(4) Three letters of recommendation;

     All application materials, together with the application fee
(US$30.00, payable to WCCEC) should be sent before the deadline
(Post marked on or before November 15) to .

Notes:
     Former applicants, including those who were short-listed but
were not accepted and those who sent in the application after the
deadline for Fall 1995, should send a cover letter (with the
application fee) to reactivate their application. They should
also make sure that their letters of recommendation arrive at
WCCEC before the deadline.
     Candidates who are short-listed will be notified by December
15. Final notification of award will be sent out by January 15.
All recipients should be ready to leave for China by Mid-
February. Like last time, there will be periodical updates on the

	PHD STUDENTSHIPS IN SPEECH SYNTHESIS AND RECOGNITION

Applications are invited for 2 PhD STUDENTSHIPS at the Centre for
Speech Technology Research (CSTR) at the University of Edinburgh,
linked to research projects on the modelling of prosody for speech
synthesis and recognition.

The students will be registered in the Department of Linguistics, of
which CSTR is a part.

Candidates should have studied speech processing as part of a first
degree in a subject such as linguistics, computing, engineering or
mathematics, or, ideally, a Masters degree in Speech and Language
Processing.

CSTR is a research centre with many years of experience in speech
synthesis and recognition and is well equipped with computing
facilities and extensive libraries of speech software, tools, and
databases. CSTR has close links with other parts of the speech and
language community in Edinburgh University in the Department of
Linguistics, the Human Communication Research Centre, the Centre for
Cognitive Science and the Department of Artificial Intelligence.
