SYMPOSIUM ON REFERENTIAL PROPERTIES OF CHINESE NOUN PHRASES
 
JUNE 24-25, 1996

We are pleased to announce that the Symposium on Referential properties of
Chinese Noun Phrases will be held at City University of Hong Kong on June
24-25, 1996.
 
The Symposium will focus on issues centering on the referential and
quantificational properties of noun phrases of Chinese (Mandarin and other
dialects), including definiteness/indefiniteness effects,
specificity/non-specificity, genericity/non-genericity,
uniqueness/non-uniqueness, identifiability/non-identifiability,
deicticity/non-deicticity, anaphoricity/non-anaphoricity, mass/count
criteria, eventuality and the definiteness requirement, wh-movement and the
defiteness effect, 'dou'-quantification, etc.
 
Abstracts of two to three pages are now invited for presentation at
the Symposium. The abstract must include a short, 10 line, summary
clearly indicating subject matter, general framework, conclusion, and
major references. Each speaker will have 20 minutes for presentation
followed by a 10- minute's discussion. Working languages of the
Symposium are English and Chinese. The result of abstract selection
will be announced by the end of February, 1996. Participants whose
abstracts are accepted must have a full paper ready by the time of
presentation. A selection of papers will be published in English after
the Symposium.
 
The deadline for abstract submission is January 10, 1996. Abstract
must be single-spaced, single-sided, and word-processed with font size
12 on A4 or 8 1/2" letter size paper. At least 1.25 inches should be
kept on the left margin. Send five copies of abstract, one with
author's name, affiliation and e- mail address, four without, and a
separate index card specifying the author's name, abstract title,
affiliation, mailing and e-mail addresses, and telephone and fax
numbers.
