The following advertisement appeared in the Dutch newspaper 'De Volkskrant'
Saturday 14 October 1995.

The Research Institute for Language and Speech (OTS) of Utrecht University
seeks candidates for
 
	4 Graduate Positions
 
The OTS has four main areas of research: Syntax & Semantics, Morphology &
Phonology, Computational Linguistics & Logic, and Phonetics.
 
Candidates are asked to apply for a graduate position within one of these
disciplines. Summaries of research proposals are available on request. It is
also possible to submit your own research proposal which will be evaluated
as to its relevance for the research programme of the OTS. During the
selection procedure candidates will do an assignment consisting of
elaborating on a research proposal in oral and written form.
 
The appointed graduate is to do research within the above-mentioned research
programme leading to a thesis within four years. In preparation of
your thesis you will have admittance to the PhD-
training programme of the Netherlands Graduate School of Linguistics (LOT)
and/or the Graduate School in Logic.
 
The succesful candidate has demonstrable interest in linguistic research and a
Dutch: 'doctoraal examen' (=eng.: MA) in linguistics or a comparable diploma
with a suitable specialization.
 
Right now, it is unclear whether you will receive a grant, or will be appointed
 as AIO (research trainee). If you are appointed as AIO, you may have some
teaching duties.
 
Pending Utrecht University's decision whether to introduce grants, we
offer a grant of about Dfl. 2.000,= a month (no withholding for taxes and
social security), or an appointment as an AIO. In the latter case you will
receive a salary of Dfl. 2.078 per month (subject to withholding for taxes
and social security) on the first year, rising to Dfl. 3.710,= per month
(subject to withholding for taxes and social security) in the fourth year.

A position is available, within a research team working on leading-edge
systems of e-mail management and conceptual information retrieval, for a
researcher to work in Conceptual Lexicography. His/her background will
include one or more of the following: Cognitive Science, Psycholinguistics,
Lexicography, Cognitive Grammar, Computational Linguistics (not Chomskyan or
neo-Chomskyan), Neurolinguistics, or Semantics. It would also be a definite
asset for the candidate to have some skills in computing.
 
The parts of the project in which he/she will be working will involve the
application of a comprehensive system of conceptual codes to the
construction and use of meaning profiles and conceptual lexicons in the
development of one or more products. The individual will be expected to work
closely with three other lexicographers, and to liaise with all other
members of the team. In addition to having a degree related to at least one
of the above areas, the applicant should be able to establish his/her
ability to conduct research, and to demonstrate a clear and definite
interest in this research area.
