The Journal of Sociolinguistics is a new international forum for leading
research on language and society. It is open to both established and
innovative approaches to sociolinguistic research.
The Journal promotes sociolinguistics as a thoroughly linguistic and
thoroughly social-scientific endeavour. The linguistic and the social will
both be present in all contributions.
The Journal will be hospitable to linguistic analyses which range from the
micro to the macro, from the quantitative study of phonological variables to
discourse analysis of texts.
Contributions from the ethnographic, variationist and sociology of language
traditions are welcomed, as are papers from the social psychology of
language, anthropological linguistics, critical discourse analysis, language
and gender studies, pragmatics and conversational analysis.
The Journal will publish research which illuminates linguistic and
communication processes, as well as applying and developing models of
society and social processes. Language will be treated
as not only a reflection of society but as itself constituting much of the
character of social life.
Fresh approaches to the field will be encouraged through publication of
commissioned articles, thematic issues, topical forums, and the opportunity
for debate among contributors.
The Journal will explicitly promote the building and critique of
sociolinguistic theory and encourage the application of recent developments
in social theory to linguistic data and issues.

SUBMISSIONS
Four copies of papers should be sent to either editor.
Contributions should be written in English. They should be typed double
spaced throughout, with wide margins, on single sided A4 or 8.5 x 11-inch
paper. They should include a separate title page, an abstract of up to 150
words, a list of up to eight key words, and a 50-word biography of each
author. References should use the author/date system. Camera-ready copy
will be required for publication of figures. All papers will be
peer-reviewed.
Include full postal address, email address, telephone and fax numbers.

Conference Theme: Crossing Disciplinary Boundaries
**********************Call for Papers and Posters**********************
The Interdisciplinary Ph.D. Program in Second Language Acquisition and
Teaching (SLAT) at the University of Arizona has been selected to host the
Second Language Research Forum in 1996. Papers on all topics in the field of
Second Language Acquisition and Teaching are welcome, but presentations
addressing the conference theme are strongly encouraged. Abstracts are invited
for individual or joint papers or posters on topics in L2 analysis, L2
processes, L2 use, and L2 pedagogy/program administration.
Individual papers will be 20 minutes long with 5 minutes for discussion.
Submissions should include (a) three anonymous copies of an abstract (500
words max.); (b) one copy stating the name of the author(s) and
affiliation(s); (c) a 50 word summary of the presentation to be included in
the conference program if accepted; (d) a typed 3"x 5" card bearing the title
of the paper/poster and the name(s), affiliation(s), phone number(s),
snailmail and e-mail address(es) of the author(s). Please indicate in the
upper righthand corner of your abstract whether it should be considered for
the paper or the poster sessions. You may submit only one abstract for a
single or joint paper presentation and only one for a single or joint poster
session. Please also indicate whether you would like e-mail acknowledgement
of receipt of the proposal. If you have any questions regarding the submission
