Hi LINGUIST LIST netters,
I got 2 things to ask you (one on text linguistics, the other on
psychology/psycholinguistics):

1. I'm doing a research paper on text linguistics (i.e. WRITTEN discourse
analysis), tracing the history from the Prague School (e.g. Mathesius'
Functional Sentence Perspective, Vachek, Firbas and Danes), to
the London School (e.g. Malinowski, Firth, Halliday, and maybe Sinclair),
to other European schools (e.g. de Beaugrande & Dressler, van Dijk &
Kintsch). And, if possible, I'd like also to trace the tradition to
Swales' Genre Analysis School and Kaplan's (& Connor's) Contrastive
Rhetoric approach.
	Questions:
1.1 Besides the excellent surveys by Sampson (1980) and de Beaugrande
(1991), what other materials (both the classics & current) do you
recommend (both as introductory and more advanced readings)?
1.2 How should I tie the European tradition(s) to the American (e.g.
Kinneavy or Longacre)?

2. My friend wants to know which books have a good survey of something like
the schools of psychology/psycholinguistics (e.g. the Freudian school?),
showing the major ideas, approach & methodology, and strengths &
weaknesses of each school.

Please send your messages DIRECTLY to ME at:

	 AP120 at columbia.edu.

I promise to give a summary to the List later. THANK YOU!

Subject: Intro to Lang Courses

Our English department is reevaluating our required Introduction to Language
course this year (currently cross-listed with the Intro course inthe
Linguistics dept) in terms of what is happening at other institutions.
The section is currently taught by our language section, comprised of
linguists and those with strong linguistics backgrounds.

We are attempting to gather information on what is done in other
English departments. We would appreciate any information any of you
could provide. Please send mail to

baltes at jkhbhrc.byu.edu

Thank you

Hi! I just have a general question. Is there someone out there who knows
how to go about looking for post-doc's possibilities starting in
January'96. Thanks.
