The post will be filled from 1 October 1996. The initial appointment
will be for one year extendible to a maximum of three years.
Applicants should be native speakers of Japanese with experience
teaching a foreign language (preferably Japanese to non-native
speakers). Applicants should be prepared to participate fully in the
ongoing development of a competency-based language curriculum.
Experience working in a large language programme is desirable. The
additional ability to teach Korean language, Japanese literature, or
Classical Japanese will all be considered advantages.

Duties

(i) In conjunction with other members of staff, to teach modern
Japanese to students of all degree courses. (ii) To take primary
responsibility for the ongoing development of the core of the
upper-level language curriculum. (iii) If possible, to teach Korean
language, Japanese literature, or Classical Japanese when necessary.
(iv) To act as one of several Tutors for undergraduates in Japanese
Honours degree courses. (v) To share in the administrative work of
the Department of East Asian Studies and to act as an Examiner; the
latter may include oral and written examinations as well as the
marking of essays and dissertations.

Conditions

Salary (under review) will be STG14,317 - STG15,986 per annum
according to qualifications and experience. The new Instructor will
normally be expected to teach no more than 12 contact hours per week.
For qualified candidates, arrangements can be made with certain
departments of the University (e.g. Linguistics, Modern Languages,
etc.) for simultaneous enrollment in a PhD or other degree programme.

The Department

Over the past two years, the Department of East Asian Studies at the
University of Durham has undergone a large expansion in Japanese
Honours courses and student numbers. First-year intake in Japanese is
now at an average of 23 students per year. The new Instructor will be
the fifth full-time member of staff devoted to Japanese studies.
