Subject:  Job:  EFL/EAP/Sociolinguistics at Kwansei Gakuin University
 
Kwansei Gakuin University's School of Policy Studies announces a
tenure-track position in EFL/EAP/Sociolinguistics, to begin
3/1/98 or possibly 9/1/97, at the Lecturer, Assistant Professor,
or Professor level.
 
Duties include 5-6 1.5 hour classes per week, divided between
English skills and content area courses; at least .25 share of
English Language Program administration, including leadership of
ELP staff and possibly scheduling; and a major role in
collaborative curriculum, materials, and test development.
Active involvement in the planning and implementation of entrance
exams and occasional campus events is also expected.  Possible
undergraduate content courses include Sociolinguistics,
Cross-cultural Communication, Language & Communication, World
Englishes, Language Policy, and Multilingual/Multicultural
Societies; graduate courses to begin in 2000.
 
Highly competitive salary, generous research allowances,
subsidized furnished housing, and R/T airfare are provided.  The
Kobe-Sanda campus (two years old) is located approximately one
hour from Osaka or Shin-Kobe stations.
 
The successful candidate will have native-like competence in
English and at least intermediate proficiency in Japanese with a
commitment to further improvement; a Ph.D. or Ed.D. in hand or
close to completion in Applied Linguistics, Sociolinguistics, or
a closely related field; a record of relevant publications and
presentations; substantial solid EFL experience; computer
literacy; specific experience in curriculum development, testing,
CALL, and/or EAP; an ability to function well as a part of a
team; and a strong commitment both to students and further
professional development.

A successor to Professor Bernhard Fabian is to be appointed,

        Chair (C4) for the Study of the Book
 
in the University of Muenster, Germany (Institutum Erasmianum).
 
Applications are invited from established scholars with interests
in the history and sociology of text (for example in the
production,distribution and reception of the book as medium, in
critical bibliography and editing, in electronic publishing,
etc.). Candidates should have teaching and research interests in
English-speaking culture and one other European cultural area.
 
Minimum qualifications are the Habilitation or its equivalent,
e.g. PhD.  Selection will be on merit; applications are
emphatically welcome from women; all things otherwise being
equal, a disabled candidate would be given preference.
