This university textbook, written in French, is an introduction to General
Phonetics, with special reference to the French language. All aspects of the
vocal character of human language have been dealt with, taking into account
current research at all levels. Production, transmission, perception and
representation are each analysed in different chapters dealing with
articulatory phonetics and cineradiology, acoustics and spectrography,
audition and discrimination, phonetic representation, and prosody. The
contributions of sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics to
the understanding of vocal units are properly assessed. Current knowledge in
speech recognition and speech synthesis is also covered. A brief summary of
the history of the French sound system is also outlined. This introductory
course concludes with two broadening chapters, one on General Phonetics and
the other on Functional Phonetics (Structural Phonology). Students will be
glad to note that, besides numerous bibliographical references included in
each chapter, referring both to French and English works, the book contains
a complete set of exercises ...and answers.
