We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

Does anybody happen to know papers, or maybe even books, analyzing the
means of communication on IRC? I have not been able to find anything so
far, but I feel sure there must be something.

I wonder if anyone can tell me where I can lay my hands on a user
friendly phonetics font package that is IBM (Windows) compatible? I
would be most grateful for any suggestions.

Subject: request: research on language use in new media

For a course dealing with `communication in the context of new technologies'
we are looking for research on this subject. The aim of the course is to
provide students with a clearer understanding of the relationships between
communication processes/patterns and new technologies (e.g. Internet, WWW,
CD-ROM). We are primarily interested in the following fields of
investigation:

* language use in e-mail messages, as compared to written and oral language,
* the way WWW-pages are read and interpreted by readers,
* the way people read and use information on CD-ROMS.
* writing processes concerning electronic documents (i.a. hypertext,
  WWW-pages).

We would very much appreciate references to publications, reports,
discussions etc. on these issues. We will post a summary to the list, if
there is sufficient interest. Thanks in advance,

Subject: Use of Heuristics in Linguistics

I would appreciate all references to the explicit use of heuristics,
both as a metatheoretical tool and as a tool in the discovery
procedure in the analysis of data. I am already familiar with
work done in psychology, mathematics, artificial intelligence and
philosophy of science, as well as Botha (1981) and Pericliev (1990) in
linguistics.

I am writing a dissertation on the use of heuristics for semantic
analysis. I would be happy to hear from anyone engaged in related
work, and I will summarize if there is interest.

Of the three sentences below, why is l. ungrammatical but
2. and 3. grammatical?

    1. *The books sell well (in order) to raise money.,
    2. The books must sell well (in order) to raise money.
    3. It is necessary that the books sell well (in order) to raise money.

If I receive responses, I will summarize them. Thank you.
