GRADUATE POSITION AVAILABLE (18 hours / week)
 
                           GMD-KONTEXT,
        the Natural Language Research and Development Unit of
        The German National Centre for Information Technology
                        Darmstadt, Germany
 
invites applications for a graduate position in the KONTEXT text
analysis project.
 
In this project (http://www.darmstadt.gmd.de/KONTEXT/kontext.html) a
text analysis system is being developed which generates a formal
representation ot text content and text structure.  The
Ph.D. candidate's task will be to work in the field of grammar
development (German) and syntax or semantics or anaphora and reference
resolution.
 
Applicants should have
-       a degree in computer science and/or computational
        linguistics
- expertise in at least one of the following fields
	-	syntax
	-	semantics (e.g. temporal, spatial, modal semantics,
                           lexical semantics)
	-	formal logic
-       programming experience (preferably in LISP or Prolog or C++/C)
 
Fluent command of written and spoken German is required.
 
PAYMENT
 
A flat rate for doctorate positions will be paid.

	SENIOR LECTURER/ASSOCIATE PROFESSOR IN MODERN ENGLISH LANGUAGE
 
 
Applications are invited for the position of Senior Lecturer in Modern
English Language in the Department of English Language and Literature
at the University of Groningen, The Netherlands. The thriv ing English
Department at Groningen seeks to appoint a scholar with research
expertise and international recognition in the field of theoretical
linguistics, though also with broad-ranging interests in empirical and
applied linguistic research. The successful candidate will be expected
to participate in the research programme of the Groningen Centre for
Language and Cognition, and to complement the research interests of
the Head of Modern English Language, Prof.  Herman Wekker.
 
The Department is seeking a candidate with proven excellence in
university teaching of English, and a commitment to the range of
linguistic teaching activities (including both theoretical courses and
English language proficiency for advanced learners). The new Senior
Lecturer will be required to function well as part of a team and also
play a leading role in the management structures of the depa rtment
and faculty. For this reason candidates will be expected either to be
fluent in Dutch, or to achieve fluency within two years of
appointment.
 
The appointment is from 1 September 1996, or as soon as possible
thereafter. This is a "tenure track" position with a probationary
period of one year. The salary will be between 7218 - 9700 Dutch Gui
lders gross per month, depending on relevant experience. The closing
