Announcement & Call for Papers

2nd WORLD CONGRESS OF AFRICAN LINGUISTICS

July 27 - August 3, 1997
at the University of Leipzig, Germany

Congress Chairperson: Ekkehard Wolff (Leipzig)
Congress Committee:Norbert Cyffer (Wien)
Bernd Heine (K=F6ln)
Ekkehard Wolff (Leipzig)

General Remarks

Following a decision by the Standing Committee for the Congress of
African Linguistics, the 2nd World Congress of African Linguistics is
now finally scheduled to take place between the 27th July and 3rd
August 1997 in Leipzig, Germany. The Congress will be hosted by one
of Europe's oldest universities (founded in 1409) with over 100
years tradition of research into and teaching of, African
languages. The city of Leipzig itself prides itself not only of its
famous university, but also of 1000 years of recorded history, 500
years of international commerce and trade fairs ("Leipziger
Messe"), its recognition as Germany's historical capital of printing
and publishing, its international tradition as a centre of
classical music and Jazz. And finally: It was here that in 1989
citizens started the "peaceful revolution" which led to the collapsing
of the former German Democratic Republic. The 2nd World Congress
of African Linguistics has been scheduled in order not to clash
with two other important professional meetings in western Europe at
about the same time: The World Congress of Linguistics in Paris
(July 21 - 25), and the=20 International Conference of the Historical
Linguistics Association in Essen (August 10 -17).

Papers

Papers on all areas relating to African Linguistics will be
accepted. Official congress languages are English, French and
German. Participants are invited to propose papers (subject to
acceptance or refusal by Committee, presentation time: 20min.)
together with their registration, providing provisional title and
abstract (maximum: one typewritten page, in the language of
presentation), and indication of the section in which the paper
is to be presented. The following sections of the congress are
envisaged:

Morphology,
Syntax,
Semantics,
Pragmatics,
Discourse Analysis and Aesthetics of
Oral Literature,
Historical Linguistics,
Sociolinguistics,

Other.

facilitate the planning of the congress and seek funding. Only
participants who have registered preliminarily can be sure to
receive a subsequent Circular containing registration forms for
final registration and details concerning

need financial support in order to be able to attend the congress
