                     BAAL Book Prize 1996

This is the LAST CALL for nominations to the 1996 BAAL Book Prize.
 
Each year the British Association for Applied Linguistics makes an
award to an outstanding book in Applied Linguistics published in English
in the previous year.
 
In 1995 over 40 entries were submitted by publishers in Britain, Europe
and North America. A joint award was made at the Association's
Annual Meeting to:
 
  Ulrike Meinhof and Kay Richardson (eds) (1994) _Text, Discourse and
  Context:  Representations of Poverty in Britain_. London: Longman
 
    and
 
  Alastair Pennycook (1994) _The Cultural Politics of English as an
  International Language_. London: Longman.
 
Entries for this year's prize should be notified to the BAAL
Publications Secretary by March 1st 1996. Nominations must be made by
publishers and four copies of each title, together with an
administration fee to the value of 25 pounds sterling will be
required. If you are the author of an important text in Applied
Linguistics (in the broadest sense) published last year then please
forward this notice to your publisher.
 
The award will be announced at the BAAL Annual Meeting at Swansea,
September 9th-12th. The conference this year has the theme of
'Evolving Models of Language'.

Announcement and Call for Papers:
 
The Eighth Annual UCLA Indo-European Conference will be held on May
24-25, 1996 at the UCLA campus. We invite papers on any aspect of
Indo-European Studies: linguistics, archaeology, comparative mythology
and culture. Papers on both interdisciplinary and specific topics
(e.g., typology, methodology, reconstruction, the relation of IE to
other language groups, the interpretation of material culture, etc.)
are welcome.
 
Abstracts should be approximately 2 typewritten pages (double- spaced)
and must be received by March 15.  A period of 20 minutes will be
allotted for each paper, followed by a 10 minute discussion period.

Through the generosity of its donors, the Friends and Alumni of
Indo-European Studies (FAIES) will offer a prize for the best paper by
a current student or recent Ph.D.  (received 1991 or later).  Please
indicate your current status and year of Ph.D. with your abstract if
you qualify.
