Subject: Mellon Post-Doctoral Fellowships at Northwestern University
FINAL ANNOUNCEMENT -- DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS MARCH 1
The Department of Linguistics at Northwestern announces the
availability, subject to administrative approval, of up to
two postdoctoral fellowships funded through a grant from the
Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Fellowships are for a period
of two academic years beginning September 1, 1996.
Candidates must hold a Ph.D in linguistics or a related
field by the starting date of the position. We are seeking
candidates with expertise in one or more of the following
areas: sentential semantics, computational linguistics,
language typology, quantitative sociolinguistics, first
language acquisition, and bilingualism. Preference will be
given to candidates whose research interests are inter-
disciplinary and mesh with those of the current faculty.
Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications.
The positions provide funds for computer facilities and
professional travel. Successful candidates will be expected
to participate fully in Northwestern's thriving inter-
disciplinary research environment, as well as to teach two
quarter-length courses per year.
Applications are due at Northwestern by March 1, 1996. The
application should include the candidate's CV (indicating an
e-mail address), a statement of research and teaching
interests, reprints or other written work, and the names of
three references. Include teaching evaluations if
available. Candidates should arrange to have the three
letters of reference sent directly to the search committee
by the deadline.

Post-doctoral Position (Phonology)
The Department of Linguistics at the University of Rochester has an opening
for a teaching post-doc with a primary specialization in phonological
theory; candidates will be strongly preferred who have a secondary
interest in some aspect of language learning or processing (computational
or psychological) and/or an interest in the phonology of signed languages.
The position requires teaching one course each semester, one of them a
research seminar in the person's primary specialization, and the other at
the undergraduate level. The stipend is $20,000 for the 1996-7 academic
year. Must have PhD in hand by Sept. 1,1996. Send vita, statement of

Programmer, Natural Language Processing
A Career Opportunity at the T. J. Watson Research Center
The Digital Libraries Department at the T. J. Watson Research Center
is looking for a skilled programmer for our Natural Language project,
which includes Grammar Design and Development, Machine Translation,
and Grammar Checking. The opening is for work on the Machine
Translation subproject, initially for the transfer shell component.
Be part of a small, dynamic team which supports an international
Machine Translation project in IBM that has already produced a product.
You will be developing product-level code, and the position is ideal for
someone who likes to program and takes pride in producing good,
dependable code.
Qualifications:
Candidates for these positions must have strong programming skills in
C and C++, good linguistic skills and some knowledge of Prolog.
Fluency in a major foreign language (as well as English), and experience
in Machine Translation and in programming of interfaces will be a plus.
Strong candidates will probably have an MS in Computer Science with high
achievement.
