Workshop on
STRUCTURE AND CONSTITUENCY IN
NATIVE AMERICAN LANGUAGES
To be held at
The University of Manitoba
March 29th - 31st, 1996

We invite papers on specific topics which speak to general
questions of structure and constituency in the analysis of native
languages of North and South America. While papers should speak
to structure and constituency, we hope that contributions will
vary w.r.t. the kinds of evidence they explore. Individual
papers might address questions in, for example, such areas as:
- the inventory of lexical and functional categories
- the projection of lexical and functional categories
- the analysis and formal treatment of syntactic or
semantic relations in syntax and morpho-syntax
- the division of labour between syntax and morpho-syntax
- the interface between syntax and morpho-syntax
- structural restrictions on syntactic or semantic
relations in syntax and morpho-syntax
Abstracts should be no longer than 1 page (a second page with
references and extra examples may be included). Abstracts should
be submitted in 5 copies: 1 camera-ready copy with the author's
name, and 4 anonymous copies. A 3x5 card giving the title of the
paper and the author's name, address, affiliation, phone number,
and e-mail address should accompany the abstracts.

2nd CALL FOR PAPERS:
3RD INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON HPSG
* Update: Special Session on THE THEORY OF THE LEXICON *
Marseille, France
The 3rd International Conference on Head-Driven Phrase Structure
Grammar (HPSG) will be held in Marseille, France, May 20-21, 1996.
Abstract submissions on any topic related to HPSG and related
approaches are welcome, including original proposals addressing
matters of empirical analysis (in any area of linguistics), the
architecture of linguistic theory, formal foundations, or computer
implementations.
The conference will consist of 25 minute papers, with 10 additional
minutes reserved for discussion of each. The conference will consist
of a GENERAL SESSION and a SPECIAL SESSION on
THE THEORY OF THE LEXICON
Invited Speaker: Charles Fillmore (University of California, Berkeley)
This session on the Theory of the Lexicon invites abstracts on all
aspects of lexical representation, including (but not limited to):
*formal aspects of and alternatives to lexical rules
*inheritancehierarchies (defaults, multiple inheritance, etc.)
*lexical semantics(lexical decomposition, the mapping problem,
argument structure, etc.)
*morphological issues (representation of paradigms, compounding,
incorporation, etc.)
*complex lexical signs (idiosyncratic constructions and idioms)
Following the paper presentations will be an open discussion of the HPSG
lexicon.

In addition, a session jointly organized by HPSG-96 and TALN-96
(Traitement Automatique du Langage Naturel), will be held on the
morning of May 22, on
IMPLEMENTING HPSG
(TALN-96 will take place at the same location immediately after

12 copies of a two-page ANONYMOUS abstract should be accompanied
