Subject:  'outside' member on PhD committees
 
Here at the Univ of North Texas, the administration has dropped the
requirement that PhD committees include an 'outside' member (i.e.,
a faculty member from some other department); individual departments
may elect to retain the 'outside' requirement. As one might expect,
the whole affair has generated a good deal of heated debate. I would
like to hear from folks at other PhD-granting institutions on what
their policy is. Specifically,
 
1. What institution are you affiliated with?
 
1. Does your institution require an 'outside' member on PhD committees?
 
2. Is the 'outside' requirement a departmental option only?
 
I'll post whatever folks let me know ...

I am seeking the references to what I believe are two articles by
Joshua Fishman (at least one of which had co-author[s]).  Both
appeared ca.  1990-94, if I recall correctly.  One was Fishman's
interpretation of the social and political forces underlying the
English-only movement in the U.S.A. in the late 1980s.  The other was
a statistical analysis, comparing multilingualism with economic
development, civil strife etc., using nation-states as the units of
analysis.  If you have the references to these journal articles,
please reply by private e-mail; I will post the citations to this list
later.  Thank you.

I strongly feel that a discussion list is needed just for syntax in the
Chomskyan tradition and have not been able to locate an already-established
one.  The difficulty many experience in their initial contacts with
GB/P&P/Minimality, as well as the rapid changes which take place within
this framework argue strongly, I feel, for such a location in cyberspace.
 
I'd like to hear from others who agree, from undergrad syntax students,
to instructors, to whoever else thinks this would be a good idea.
