6th NIHONGO STUDENT SEMINAR
(Nihongo Kyouiku Gakusei Seminar)
 
The 6th Nihongo Student Seminar will be held at the Yoyogi Olympic Centre in
Tokyo in September 1996.  It is a group of students and others who are
interested in Japanese language and the teaching of Japanese.  Details have not
been confirmed yet, as the organisers would like to include ideas and
suggestions from intereste people into the agenda.
 
The meeting will be held in the form of group discussions and lectures.  The
seminar language is Japanese.  Expenses will be at about 2000 yen, which
includes accommodation, but no travel expenses and meals.  People interested in
participating or organizing this meeting are kindly required to contact Ms

	TERTIARY LITERACY CONFERENCE: Research and Practice
		   MELBOURNE  14 - 16 March 1996
		 VICTORIA UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY
 
THE CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES
 - To gain a national perspective on tertiary literacy and its reflection
   in the quality of university learning and teaching
 - To explore the question of Australian universities' responsibilities
   for tertiary literacy
 - To define tertiary literacy
 - To facilitate the exchange of information about current tertiary
   literacy policies and practices
 - To provide a forum for the discussion of the pedagogical desirability of
   tertiary literacy programs
 - To explore the relationship between the university research outcomes and
   the availability of Academic and Research English programs
 - To provide a forum for the presentation of current research in the field
 - To contribute to the development of policies and practices in the language
   area in the tertiary education sector.

The Conference program will consist of about eighty presentations including
plenary sessions, colloquia, papers, poster sessions and workshops. It will
feature four main themes:
Theme 1: Policy and practice of tertiary literacy
Theme 2: Inter-cultural variation of academic communication
Theme 3: Discipline specific discourses
Theme 4: Research English

communicating between cultures

Tertiary literacy policies: needs and practice
Working together? Academic literacies, co-production and professional=20
partnerships.
Institutional practices in promoting tertiary literacy
Disciplinary and cultural perspectives on student literacy
 
SOCIAL PROGRAM
Welcome Reception: Thursday 14 March 1996; 6.30pm - 8.00pm
Conference Dinner: Friday 15 March 1996; 7.30pm - 11.00pm; $40 per person
The Conference dinner is optional and participants are advised to include
payment with Conference registration fees as limited places are available.

The registration desk will be located in Building M, Footscray Campus, VUT,
Ballarat Rd. Conference materials will be available for collection from
6.00pm to 8.00 pm on Thursday, 14 March 1996 and from 8.30 am on Friday,
15 March 1996.

Early bird full registration=	$120
Student full registration=	$100
One day registration= 		$ 80
Full time registration includes: Welcome reception, Conference attendance,
satchel and materials, all morning and afternoon teas and lunches
One day registration includes: Conference attendance on nominated day,
satchel and materials, morning and afternoon teas and lunch on nominated day
 
PUBLICATION OF CONFERENCE PAPERS
Presenters who wish to have their papers considered for publication should
submit their completed manuscripts by the last day of the Conference.
