French, a rather woolly and reductive designation. The particularities
of national languages such as Belgian and Quebec French are often

presents contributions from the first Montreal conference:
Lexique-grammaire compares, which dealt with the formal description
of different variants of French from two essential points of view
(lexicon and syntax) and computational treatment of data.

Grammatical Theory and Romance languages:

This volume presents recent theoretical research on Romance languages,
selected from papers presented at the 25th Linguistic Symposium On
Romance Languages. It includes studies of individual Romance languages
as well as comparative studies -- both within the Romance family and
with non-Romance languages (Basque, Bulgarian, Germanic and
Quechua). Papers in phonetics and phonology treat stress, syllable
structure, s-weakening. and the declination effect. Morphological
topics include class-marker suppression and gender agreement and
suppletion. Topics in syntactic theory include clitics, participial
and adjectival agreement, the syntax of tense, mood, negation,
adjectival predication. Tough-constructions, quantification and null
objects.

Case Suspension and Binary Complement Structure in French
JULIA HERSCHENSOHN
Adopting the theoretical framework of the minimalist program, this
study of syntactic limitation on complement configuration investigates
the link between thematic external arguments and case. Using evidence
from pronominal, psychological experiencer, and inalienable
constructions, it argues that both accusative and dative are
structural camses in French and that this duality is reflected in a
parallel limit on argument projection. Larson's single complement
hypothesis, which allows a maximum of two internal arguments, provides
the theoretical justification for this proposal. The testing ground
for the binary hypothesis is a group of nonthematic subject
constructions involving undative as well as unaccusative
verbs. linking, according to Burzio's generalization, case suspension
and lack of an internal argument The investigation of these
constructions and those involving partitive case provides not only a
theoretically significant contribution to our understandling of
grammar, but also a motivated explanation for a number of empirical
problems in French.

Advances in Roumanian Linguistics Edited by GUGLIELMO CINQUE and
GIULIANA GIUSTI (University of Venice) The aim of the book is to
collect and make available to the public recent studies on Romanian in
the framework of Generative Grammar. All the studies can be considered
as highly advanced from both the empirical and the theoretical point
of view. In fact, they deal with many of the phenomena that
differentiate this language from other well-studied ones, adopting and
further improving recent developments in linguistic theory. In this
respect the book contributes both to Romanian studies and to
theoretical linguistics.  These studies cover major areas of general
syntactic investigation: the syntax of nominal expressions (Giusti on
determiners, Grosu on free relative clauses), clausal structure
(Motapanyane), clitic placement (Dobrovie-Sorin), and morpho-semantics
(Farkas and Zec). In so doing, they address the problems of the
definition and refinement of the theory of functional projections,
contributing new ideas and evidence for their

Linguistic Theory and the Romance Languages

This volume contains revised versions of papers given at a conference
at the Manoir de Brion, in Normandy. They deal with phonology,
morphology, syntax, and semantics, and cover a wide range of Romance
languages, including many lesser-known varieties. The contributors to
the volume are committed to the view that Romance Linguistics is not
narrowly philological, but is rather General Linguistics practiced
with reference to particular data. The point has been made many times,
but is worth reiterating, that Latin and the Romance languages offer
an unrivaled wealth of synchronic and historical documentation, and
provide both a stimulus and a test-bed for ideas about language
structure, language change, and language variation. Many of the papers
in this volume can be interpreted simultaneously as using the
analytical tools of linguistic theory to illuminate the structure of
individual Romance languages or of the family as a whole, and as using
Romance data to throw light on general problems in linguistic theory,
or on the structure of languages beyond Romance. Specific areas
covered include: prosodic domains; quantification; agreement; the
prepositional accusative; clitic pronouns; voice and
