Preface written by John R. Rickford, Professor of Linguistics,
	Stanford University.
This volume presents a collection of recent work in the area
of sociolinguistics. This selection of papers represents the latest
research in the field, offering papers that present and analyze new
data and papers that synthesize known theories and analyze old data in
order to arrive at a fresh look at how social and linguistic behavior
interact. The papers in this volume are culled from those presented at
"New Ways of Analyzing Variation" at Stanford University, October
1994, and extend the area traditionally covered by variation studies
to include work on discourse analysis, style and register,
codeswitching, and other related topics.

Akatsuka, Noriko, Iwasaki, Shoichi, and Strauss, Susan (University of
California, Los Angeles); JAPANESE/KOREAN LINGUISTICS, VOLUME
	5; ISBN: 1-57586-045-7 (cloth) $64.95; 1-57586-044-9 (paper)

Japanese and Korean are typologically quite similar, so a
linguistic phenomenon in one language often has a counterpart in the
other. The papers in this volume are intended to further compare
and/or contrast research in both languages. This selection of papers
reflects the Fifth Japanese/Korean Linguistics Conference's unique
division into four separate panesl: Conversation, Grammaticalization
and Semantics, Syntax and Semantics, and Korean Phonology.

Goldberg, Adele (University of California, San Diego); CONCEPTUAL
STRUCTURE, DISCOURSE AND LANGUAGE; ISBN: 1-57586-041-4 (cloth)

	Publications 1996: http://csi-www.stanford.edu/publications/

This collection of papers is the outcome of the first
Conceptual Structure, Discourse and Language conference (CSDL) held at
the University of California, San Diego in October 1995. CSDL was
organized with the intention of bringing together researchers from
both "cognitive" and "functional" approaches to linguistics. The
papers in this volume span a variety of topics, but there is a common
thread running through them: the claim that semantics and discourse
properties are fundamental to our understanding of language.

Camacho, Jose, Choueiri, Lina, and Watanabe, Maki eds. (University of
Southern California); PROCEEDINGS OF THE FOURTEENTH WEST COAST
CONFERENCE ON FORMAL LINGUISTICS; ISBN: 1-57586-043-0 (cloth)
	$74.95; 1-57586-042-2 (paper) $27.50; 613 pp. CSLI
	Publications 1996: http://csi-www.stanford.edu/publications/
        email: pubs at roslin.stanford.edu
This volume presents the proceedings of the fourteenth West
Coast Conference on Formal Linguistics held at the University of
Southern California. This volume is a comprehensive representation of
the papers presented at the conference. Topics range from child
language to the transitivity of verbs to determiners and context sets
and the languages covered range from Cree to Hindi to German. This
volume will be of interest to a wide range of linguists covering
numerous special interests and fields.
