24th International Systemic Functional Congress

July 21-25, 1997
Glendon College, York University, Toronto, Canada

Congress Theme

Learning how to mean:  transdisciplinary perspectives on language in
context.

Communicating in contexts - the view from:
  * systemic functional grammar
  * primate communication
  * language development in normal children
  * language disorders	

Purpose

The Congress will bring together graduate students and scholars in
linguistics, psychology, psychiatry, comparative primatology, philosophy,
ethnomusicology and anthropology with an interest in a functional view of
language and other semiotic modalities, such as gesture, gaze, sign
language, and visual images to make meanings in context.

* Papers in all disciplines will be considered.

* Morning plenaries will raise questions and issues about the Congress
theme.

* Afternoon workshops focusing on individual texts will continue the
discussion of issues raised in the plenaries.

* Invited Fellows, senior scholars in other disciplines along with Systemic
Functional linguists, will ensure that the workshops address the
transdisciplinary concerns of the Congress.

*  A workgroup will be established to develop 'The Multi-Media Discourse
Analysis Handbook: A teaching and learning guide', which will focus on
the co-deployment of linguistic, gestural, and other semiotic modalities
in the making of meanings in discourse.  The Handbook would develop in
explicit and workable ways the concerns of all the disciplines represented
at the Congress.

PAPERS:

Papers on any aspect of Systemic Functional Grammar or its application
will be considered, in addition to papers addressing the conference theme.
The deadline for submission of abstracts is November 15, 1996.

All papers will be 45 minutes in length including question time.

Attendance at the Congress is limited to around 200 delegates.

E-mail is preferred.  Send  abstracts to isfc97 at delphi.glendon.yorku.ca by
15 November 1996.  If you do not have e-mail, send  hard copy to  ISFC97,
English Department, Glendon College, 2275 Bayview Avenue, Toronto ON,
Canada M4N 3M6.  Do not fax your abstract.

Notification of acceptance will be sent by the end of February 1997.

CALL FOR PAPERS!
Abstracts are invited for twenty minute talks in all areas of formal
linguistics from any theoretical perspective.

Please mail 10 (ten) copies of an anonymous abstract along with a 3"x 5"
card with paper title, name of author(s), affiliation, address, phone
number, e-mail address and, to facilitate the review process, primary area
of linguistics addressed in the paper.  Abstracts should be no more
than one page with an additional page allowed for examples and references,
with all margins at least one inch wide, in at least 11-point
type. Submissions are limited to a maximum of one individual and one joint
abstract per author.  Please do not send abstracts by e-mail.

The deadline for receipt of abstracts is November 8, 1996.
