                         WORKSHOP
             COGNITIVE LINGUISTIC APPROACHES
                   TO LEXICAL SEMANTICS

                      CALL FOR PAPERS

The XVIth Scandinavian Conference of Linguistics will be held in
Turku (Finland) from 14-16 November 1996. The conference will
have special emphasis on grammaticalization and
cognitive/functional linguistics. William Croft (Manchester) and
Bernd Heine (Koeln) have so far accepted to be plenary speakers.
   During that conference, Hubert Cuyckens and Dominiek Sandra
(both University of Antwerp, Belgium) will organize a workshop
on "Cognitive Linguistic approaches to Lexical Semantics".
   We would like to invite you contribute to this workshop with
a paper within the framework outlined below.

     COGNITIVE LINGUISTIC APPROACHES TO LEXICAL SEMANTICS

In cognitive linguistics language is considered as a means of
organizing, processing and conveying informational structures in
the mind that reflect our interaction with the world. "Language,
then, is seen as repository of world knowledge, a structured
collection of meaningful categories that help us deal with new
experiences and store old ones" (D. Geeraerts in Handbook of
Pragmatics 1995).
     Since language and linguistic structures relate to
informational structures in the mind (i.e. are associated with
world knowledge), they are inherently semantic. In the (fairly)
short history of cognitive linguistics, the study of the
semantics of lexical items has always been a major focus of
interest, including (i) research into the internal semantic
structure of separate lexical items (prototype theory, family
resemblance structures, radial categories, polysemy, diachronic
approaches) as well as (ii) reserach into larger conceptual
structures (metaphor research, frame semantics).
     Two foundational assumptions in cognitive lexical semantics
are: (i) the encyclopedic nature of linguistic meaning: there is
no need to posit a structural level of word meaning that is
different from the level where world knowledge is associated with
linguistic forms; (ii) the primacy of space: In cognitive
semantics, spatial knowledge is often analyzed as a source domain
for many linguistic expressions (cf. metaphor research,
grammaticalization processes).
     Within this general framework, this workshop aims to bring
together the latest insights into cognitive linguistic approaches
to the semantics of lexical items. In particular, the following
topics can be addressed:
1. polysemy, homonymy and vagueness;
2. the cognitive status of semantic networks (e.g., family
resemblance structures, radial categories); in particular:
   - To what extent are the different nodes in the semantic
   networks (or usages of a word) isomorphic with mental
   representations ?
   - What are the cognitive principles underlying the
   extension of one node (or word usage) to another ?
3. cognitive principles in diachronic (semantic) research and
grammaticalization research;
4. analysis of specific lexical items;
5. spatial cognition.

This workshop welcomes theoretical as well as empirical or
experimentally based contributions.
