The Department of Asian Languages & Literatures at the University of
Auckland has, commencing 1997, a tenure-track position at the rank of
Senior Lecturer (equivalent to Associate Professor) in Japanese, with
a specialisation in Japanese Pedagogy.  Applicants must have a PhD or
equivalent in the area of Japanese language, have native or near-
native competence in both Japanese and English, have demonstrated
excellence in Japanese language instruction through classroom
experience at a tertiary institution, pedagogical training, or the
development of teaching materials, including CALL.  Applicants should
also have a strong record of scholarly research, preferably in one or
more of the following areas: sociolinguistics, pragmatics, second
language acquisition.  However, candidates with other areas of
specialisation are also encouraged to apply.  The successful
candidate should be able, in cooperation with existing staff, to
provide leadership based on scholarly research in the further
development of the university's Japanese Language Programme.  For
