The Second Annual Creole Language Workshop

Creole Language Use in an Urban Setting

New Directions in Education and Society

In 1994, the Linguistics Program at Florida International University
presented the first creole language workshop of its kind in South
Florida. We are pleased to present the second such workshop, which
brings creolists, public school educators, university faculty,
students and other public sector individuals together to discuss
issues and concerns of creole language use in the educational system
and the local community.

Workshop Highlights

   * What are creole languages?
   * How are creoles different from traditional languages spoken in
     south Florida?
   * How can the public school system linguistically and educationally
better accommodate children who speak creole languages?
   * What are the implications of creoles for the public schools'
     traditional bilingual programs?
   * How can public school teachers become knowledgeable about and learn
     creole languages?
   * How can individuals in the public sector address and better
accommodate the needs of speakers of creole languages?
   * How can creole languages become part of the university curriculum?

                       14-16 November, 1996

Departing from the approach of "doing gender" it will be asked how
language serves to make gender a relevant feature of individuals:
-How do people enact their gender in conversation?
- How do they perceive women and men in communcation?
- How do linguisticcategories and structures help to emphasize and
  perpetuate the gender difference?
The symposium is a forum for European and American researchers who
