I am grateful to colleagues, and especially John E.Koontz and Pierre
Larrivee, who contributed to my search for the structure of <y>.

I would now conclude

1) that <y> is a clitic pronoun (cf Marcel y va ~ <Marcel va a Paris));

2) that its antecedent is a prep.-phrase (cf a Paris);

3) that its antecedent is characterised lexically as
a) adverb of place, cf <a Paris> or as
b) adjectival complement, cf enclin <au pouvoir> or as
c) indirect object, repondre <a une lettre.>

Bill Bennett.
