The second international conference on Formal Approaches to Japanese
Linguistics will be held at Tohoku Gakuin University, Sendai, Japan,
on August 2-3, 1996.  The first FAJL was held at MIT in May 1994, and
its proceedings can be obtained from the MIT Working Papers in
Linguistics (mitwpl at mit.edu).  The proceedings of FAJL2 will be also
distributed by the MITWPL.
 
                     CALL FOR PAPERS
 
Abstracts are invited for 30 minutes talks relating to any aspect of
Japanese formal linguistics (syntax, phonology, morphology, semantics,
psycholinguistics, pragmatics, etc.).  Papers comparing Japanese with
other languages are equally welcome.  Send nine copies of the abstract
with the title but without the name of the author, along with a
camera-ready original with the author's name and affiliation centered
under the title of the paper, to:

Abstracts may not exceed 2 pages.  Leave at least one inch margin on
all four sides.  Use fonts no smaller than 12 pts.  Also include a 3x5
card containing the following information: Title of paper, Name of
author, Address, Affiliation, E-mail address, Phone number.

GENERAL INFORMATION
Plenary sessions
The topics of these sessions are:
1. The development of linguistics in the 2nd half of the XXth century.
2. Language families, areas and types.
3. Linguistic structures and mental activities.
4. Linguistic structures and communication.
 
Invited speakers include :
 
Jean-Claude Chevallier, Haim Baruch Rosen, Luigi Rizzi, Calvert
Watkins, Gilbert Lazard, Bernard Pottier, E. Wierzbicka, Masayoshi
Shibatani, Vadim Kassevitch, Deirdre Wilson.
 
 
PAPERS Conference papers may take the form of oral presentations in
parallel sessions or posters. Oral presentations are scheduled to last
twenty minutes, including question period.  The poster session will be
allowed two hours.
 
In its present state, the list of topics for parallel sections is:
1. History of linguistics.
2. Philosophy of linguistics.
3. Typology and invariants.
4. Language policies in the contemporary worid.
5. Dialectology and sociolinguistics.
6. Psycholinguistics and neurolinguistics.
7. Language acquisition and learning.
8. Phonetics and phonology.
9. Morphology.
10. Syntax.
11. Generative grammars and formal types of syntax.
12. Semantics.
13. Lexicology.
14. Pragmatics and text linguistics.
15. Pidgins, creoles and languages in contact.
16. Historical linguistics.
17. Reconstruction and etymology.
18. Computational linguistics and computer sciences.
19. Sign languages.
20. Boundaries and overlapping of the various fields of linguistics.
 
Participants wishing to present a paper will be requested to send an
abstract before October 1, 1996.
 
TABLE RONDES - PANEL DISCUSSIONS
 
The Organizing Committee invites congressists to propose topics for
panel discussions by April 1, 1996, with a list of possible
participants. The persons whose topics are chosen will be responsible
for organizing their panel discussion. They must send the final list
of participants before January 1, 1997.  The second circular will be
mailed in June 1996.1t will be sent to those who have registered or
have contacted the Secretary by April 30, 1996.
 
 
REGISTRATION FEES:
 
Early registration has been extended to the 1st of October 1996. The
fees are : 1200 FF for participants, 600 FF for those accompanying,
and 300 FF for students.  Late registration fees: 1450 FF for
participants, 875 FF for those accompanying and 500 FF for students.
