Second Language Acquisition and Writing: A multi-disciplinary approach

University of Southampton 11-12th July, 1996

The Centre for Language in Education at the University of Southampton, in
association with the British Association for Applied Linguistics and Cambridge
University Press, invites those interested in writing in a second language to
participate in a seminar concerned with second language acquisition and
writing.

There is a need in the study of second language writing to bring together
different perspectives from fields such as psychology, discourse analysis, and
classroom research, which tend to be separated in the literature. The seminar
will look at the acquisition of writing in a second language from a number of
these perspectives. These will range from studies of cognitive processes
involved in second language writing, to interlanguage, to meta-linguistic
 studies
of writing. The programme will include research papers and symposia on topics
related to writing in a second language.

Guest Speaker: Dr. Alister Cumming, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education
Title: "Building Models of Adult ESL/EFL Writing Instruction."

The seminar is open to all those who have a professional research interest in
writing in a second language. It will cover one and a half days, commencing
lunchtime on the first day, and continuing until 4 p.m. on the second. Sessions
will be held covering topics related to applied linguistics, learning, teaching,
 and
writing processes. Conference attendance is restricted to 25 delegates.

Seminar participants are invited to give a presentation in one of the following
formats:
Oral presentations (45 minutes)
Shorter reports of work in progress (20 minutes)
Poster presentations
