THE UNIVERSITY OF HONG KONG

FACULTY OF ARTS

LANGUAGE CENTRE

The Language Centre was established in 1968. Its initial function
was to centralize and develop facilities for the teaching of
languages throughout the University. Over the years to follow, the
Language Centre built up programmes in a number of European and
Asian languages, including Japanese, Chinese for foreign speakers and
English enhancement. These latter three programmes are now handled
by the Departments of Japanese Studies and Chinese and by the English
Centre, respectively. The Language Centre, which is now based in the
Faculty of Arts, remains responsible for the teaching of degree and
non-degree (including certificate level) courses in French, German,
Italian, Spanish and Swedish throughout the University. In addition,
it maintains close links with the European Studies programmes in the
Faculty of Arts and the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Hong Kong stands at the cross-roads between East and West and a
knowledge of the various European and Asian languages fosters
understanding and enhances Hong Kong_s position as an international
city. The Language Centre will continue to strengthen its current
offerings in European languages as well as introduce new language
programmes, especially in Asian languages, in the coming years.

The present staff of the Language Centre includes an Acting Director,
a Senior Lecturer, 2 Senior Language Instructors, 15 Language
Instructors (including 9 who are part-time) and 4 visiting
teachers.

Language Instructors are well qualified, experienced and highly
motivated individuals with expertise in language teaching and
organization of courses. Visiting staff are sponsored either by the
consulate general or cultural service organization of their
countries of origin and through these contacts the Language Centre
has been able to build up exchange programmes whereby its students
travel to Europe for intensive studies in the summer.

The Language Centre is one of the best equipped centres for the
teaching of languages in Asia. It runs two Language Resources
Centres for self-instructional learning. Its laboratories are
equipped with audio-visual and computer facilities for group and
individual practice. There is also a video workshop for the
production of teaching materials and taping of student activities for
language performance review. Language Centre staff have already
carried out much exciting work in the production of teaching
materials, including materials for interactive video equipment.

The vast majority of students enrolled in courses offered by the
Language Centre are ethnic Chinese whose native language is Chinese.
They also have a grounding in English, which is the main language of
instruction at the University, but many join the European language
courses with no previous knowledge of the language. The courses are
very popular and every year the number of applications exceeds the
number of available places. The students applying for these courses
go through placement procedures where they receive advice and
evaluation of their aptitude before being formally accepted. The
yearly enrollment is around 1,000 and many more students take
advantage of the Centre_s self-instructional facilities.

Together with the English Centre, the Language Centre publishes Hong
Kong Papers in Language Teaching and Language Learning on a yearly
basis. The publication presents research work by the staff of the
two Centres and by colleagues in related fields in other tertiary
institutions.
