We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

Can anyone recommend a good Optical Character Recognition Software
Package? I am working with transliterated Sanskrit texts (NOT
Devanagari script) of varying degrees of quality and I need a program
that has a high degree of 'flexibility' in character recognition.

I am looking for e-mail or snail mail address for David Strecker, and
Donald Litton. I have looked in every resource I could think of. I
need to contact them about papers for a volume in a series I am
editing.

Subject: Ethnic and Linguistic minorities

Hi Linguists.

For anthropologists, it is a common practice to assume that
a linguistic minority is an ethnic minority.

The assumption is clear:

Linguistic identity always carries along a
        specific cultural and social identity.

Is that always the case? Why? If not, why? Can you think of cases in
which linguistic diversity does not imply ethnical diversity?

Languages and cultures are variable by their very own nature. On what
grounds do we establish that linguistic and ethnic boundaries do or do
not follow each other?

I'm asking because, among other things, I believe that, in Mexico,
the Deaf Community should be recognized as an ethnical minority.

Any feedback is welcomed. I'll be glad to summarize and
acknowledge all the responses.

Boris
