CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS

35th Annual Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics
and
8th Conference of the European Chapter of the ACL
Universidad Nacional de Educacion a Distancia (UNED), Madrid
July 7-10, 1997
The ACL'96/EACL'97 Program Committee invites proposals for the
Workshop Program for ACL'96/EACL'97, which is to be held in Madrid,
Spain, July 7th-12th, 1997. The workshops for ACL/EACL`97 will be held
in the period 11th-12th July, immediately following the main
conference.
Gathering in an informal setting, workshop participants will have the
opportunity to meet and discuss selected technical topics in an
atmosphere which fosters the active exchange of ideas among
researchers and practitioners. Members from all segments of the CL/NLP
community are invited to submit proposals for review.
To encourage interaction and a broad exchange of ideas, the workshops
should be kept rather small, preferably not more than 40 participants.
Attendance should be limited to active participants only. Workshops
are intended to be genuinely interactive events and not
mini-conferences. Thus, although the format of workshop presentations
will be determined by the organizers proposing the workshop, enough
time should be allotted for general discussion. Workshops can vary in
length, but most will last a full day. Attendees at workshops MUST
register for the main ACL/EACL conference.

Submission Details

Proposals for workshops should be no more than five pages in length,
and should contain:
A. A brief but technical description of the workshop identifying
specific technical issues that will be its focus. Planned length of
workshop, organization of sessions, planned announcements, etc. The
workshop must be open. It cannot be by invitation only, although there
certainly can be some invited talks.
B. The names, postal addresses, phone numbers and email addresses of
the organizing committee, plus plans for determining who should be on
the program committee (the workshop should plan on having a program
committee to determine which submitted papers are acceptable).
C. The name of one member of the organizing committee who is
designated the primary contact, this being someone with an email
address.
D. A list of previously-organized related workshops organized by any
of the organizing committee. This is to help the workshop chair put
the workshop in context (previous experience with similar workshops is
not required).
E. If possible, a list of tentatively confirmed attendees.
Proposers are encouraged to send their draft proposal to potential
participants for comments before submission. Proposals should be
submitted by electronic mail, in plain ASCII text as soon as possible,
but no later than December 9th, 1996. Organizers will be notified of
the committee's decision no later than January 2nd, 1997. A summary of
accepted workshops with contact addresses will be available on the ACL
webserver after that date.

Workshop organizers will be responsible for:

1. Workshop organizer must provide announcement of their workshop for
inclusion in the Conference Registration by March 1st. The
announcement must be properly formatted as follows:
A. provide latex version that fits onto 1/2 page using provided
latex template
B. provide ascii version that can be included with email announcement
C. provide HTML version that can be included on the Conference
home page.
The call should also make clear the process by which the Program
Committee will select the participants.
2. Finances: Workshops are expected to cover all expenses through
their registration fee. Unexpected loss is covered by ACL and any
surplus goes to ACL. (Budget should be revised through discussion with
the workshop chair.)
3. Workshop organizers are expected to handle registration, set up of
breaks (in conjunction with local organizer), and arrangement of
proceedings publication. Workshop organizers will be sent a set of
guidelines for the preparation of these proceedings. They may find it
convenient to use the same publisher as ACL (usually OmniPress, but
this year may be different). Printed proceedings must be ready at the
beginning of the conference.
4. A provisional list of workshop participants should be sent to the
workshop chair by May 1st, at the latest, together with a list of
audio-visual requirements and any special room requirements. Workshop
organizers must provide the local arrangement office with a final list
of workshop before the start of the main conference.
ACL/EACL reserves the right to cancel any workshop if deadlines
are missed or if the number of participants is below 25 persons.

The Penn Linguistics Club Announces
The Twenty-first Annual Penn Linguistics Colloquium
Saturday and Sunday, February 22 and 23, 1997
Invited Speaker: Alec Marantz, M.I.T.
We welcome papers on any topic in linguistics. In addition, this
year's meeting will feature a special session on morphology.
Speakers will have twenty minutes for their presentation and five
minutes for discussion and questions.
Prospective speakers should submit an abstract no later than Monday,
December 2nd, 1996 to:

Abstracts for either the general conference or the special session
should be no longer than 2 pages in 12 point font with 1 inch margins
and should be accompanied by an index card including your name,
affiliation (department and institution), address, email address and
the subfield of linguistics (or related discipline) that you find most
appropriate to your topic. All abstracts labeled "morphology" will be
considered for inclusion in the special session. Submission by email
to plc21 at babel.ling.upenn.edu will be greatly appreciated.
Colloquium participants are invited to submit their paper to the Penn
Review of Linguistics, which will be published late in the spring
following the Colloquium.
