SAUSSURE

W. Terrence Gordon. Illustrated by Abbe Lubell. SAUSSURE FOR
BEGINNERS. Writers & Readers Publishing, Inc.: New York & London,
December 1996. 122 pages. US $11.00.

This latest addition to Writers & Readers fully illustrated
"documentary comic books" opens with a definition of linguistics for
general readers, explaining how and why Saussure broke with the
traditions of nineteenth century linguistics. All of Saussure's
teachings on synchronic and diachronic linguistics are carefully and
succinctly set out, emphasizing the unity and coherence of his Course
in General Linguistics. The book also traces the fate of Saussure's
ideas at the hands of other scholars in and beyond
linguistics--Jakobson, Guillaume, Guiraud, Bloomfield, Chomsky,
Levi-Strauss, Barthes, Lacan and Derrida. Saussure's concept of
anagrams is discussed, and the work concludes with an overview of (1)
Saussure's definitions for what language is and is not; (2) his
metaphors; (3) the definitions of "linguistic value" (valeur); (4)
writing and the linguistic sign; (5) the Saussurean dualities, as well
as an exercise in spotting Saussure's principles, and a brief
