The Department seeks to make a level A (step 3) appointment
commencing 1 February 1997. The position is for 3
years. Applications are invited from persons with a completed or
nearly completed Ph.D.  in any field of German Studies, including
German as a foreign language, linguistics, applied linguistics,
literary or cultural studies, and German intellectual
history. Successful applications will be expected to teach
language classes as well as their field of expertise, and to take
charge of at least one subject.

FACULTY POSITION, INSTITUTE OF CULTURAL AND LINGUISTIC
STUDIES, KEIO UNIVERSITY
 
The Institute of Cultural and Linguistic Studies, Keio
University, announces the opening of one faculty position at the
professor (Kyoju), associate professor (Jokyoju) , or assistant
professor (Sennin-Koshi) level to conduct research in the field
of syntactic theory , starting October 1, 1997. Applicants must
hold a Ph.D. degree or equivalent and have working knowledge of
the Japanese language.  He or she must be under the age of 60 as
of October 1, 1997.
 
DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED:
1. five copies of curriculum vitae (no particular format required)
2. five copies of publication list
3. five copies of three sample publications (photocopies acceptable)
4. five copies of an essay concerning applicant's potential
contribution to the academic activities of the
Institute. This essay should be approximately 800 letters in Japanese,
and also should refer to the statement entitled "Objectives of the
Keio Institute of Cultural and Linguistic Studies."*

DEADLINE: The deadline for receipt of applications is January 10,
1997.
 
SELECTION PROCESS:
 
Candidates who are on the short list will be invited to an interview
at the Institute. Travel and accommodation will be at the applicant's

3. No inquiries concerning this opening will be accepted.
 
4. Applicants should request the document titled, "Objectives of
the Keio Institute of Cultural and Linguistic Studies" (see
DOCUMENTS TO BE SUBMITTED NO.4 above) by mail. A stamped
(¥80) self-addressed envelope must be included if mailed
within Japan.  A self-addressed envelope and an international
reply coupon must be included if mailed outside Japan. The
deadline for receipt of requests for this document is December
15, 1996.
