                    Announcement and Call for Papers

Aims and Scope:

GRAMMARS is an international forum for the dissemination of high-level
original research in the intersection between
mathematical/computational linguistics and formal language theory.

The journal is based on the fact that a certain gap exists between
linguists (trying to find adequate formal tools for natural language
description) and computer scientists (often unworried about the
descriptive applicability of the generative devices they design). Not
all linguists are acquainted with the new developments in pure formal
language theory, as well as not all computer scientists know the
concrete problems linguists deal with and the real needs they
have. The aim of the journal is to bring both communities together and
to provide a platform for discussion.

Examples of papers fitting the scope of the journal are: those
developing new generative devices potentially useful for natural
language description, and those clarifying empirical linguistic facts
in such a way that they become acceptable for formal language
treatment.

We are planning to publish 3 issues, appr. 300 pages, yearly, in
March, July and November. The first issue will be available in March,
1997. The journal will be published by the Rovira i Virgili University
(Tarragona, Spain).

Submissions:
For the purpose of refereeing, papers should be initially submitted in
hardcopy. They should be written in English and typed on single sided
A4.  They should include a up to 200-words abstract and a up to
50-words biographical statement. Since contributions will be blindly
refereed, all identifying information should be removed from the body
of the paper. 5 blind copies of the manuscript, accompanied by a cover
letter including author(s)' name, affiliation, address, phone and fax
number, and e-mail should be submitted to:

3rd issue: August 15, 1997

Offprints:
Authors of published papers will be provided with 20 offprints free of
charge.

Invitation to publishers: Publishers are invited to send relevant
books to be considered for review.  Please, send one copy of each book
to the editor of the journal at the address above. All such books will
be listed in the received books section of the journal.

The 1997 Conference of the Texas Linguistics Society
THE SYNTAX AND SEMANTICS OF PREDICATION
     The University of Texas at Austin
          March 7-9, 1997

Abstracts are invited for 30 minute talks (with 10 additional minutes
for discussion) on any topic related to the syntax and/or semantics of
predication.  Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

* Syntactic conditions on predication: c-command, interactions with
theta roles, control, binding, coordination, ellipsis, the issue of
small clauses, etc.
* Types of predication: verbal/nonverbal, primary/secondary,
categorical/thetic, individual level/stage level, etc.
* Interpretation, scope, focus, presupposition, quantification,
discourse factors, etc.
* The role of heads: copular be, pronominal elements, predicate
clitics, etc.
* The syntax and semantics of resultatives
*  Predication in the minimalist framework, GB, HPSG, LFG,
autolexical theory, etc.
*  Predication in the noun phrase

Abstracts must be no more than one 8 1/2" by 11" page, single-spaced,
and in at least 12-point font (10-point for examples), with one inch
margins on all sides.  One additional page with references, diagrams,
and data may be appended if necessary.  All submissions must include
the following items:

*  6 anonymous copies of the abstract
* 1 3x5" card with name, affiliation, address, phone number, email
address, and title of paper

Deadline for receipt of abstracts is November 1, 1996. Send abstracts

Abstracts received after the deadline will not be considered.  Fax
submissions will not be accepted. Instructions for email submissions
are available upon request.  An individual may submit at most one
single and one co-authored paper.  Accepted presenters will be
notified by mid-December, 1996.  If presenters wish to have their
papers included in the conference proceedings, they must submit a
camera-ready copy by May 15, 1997.  Proceedings will be published by
the Texas Linguistic Forum.

Preregistration for the conference is $15.00 (US) for students, $25.00
for nonstudents.
