LANGUAGE TECHNOLOGY SPECIALIST
 
The Five Colleges of Ohio Consortium, Inc., supported by a grant
from the Mellon Foundation, seeks a qualified candidate to train
a diverse foreign language faculty in a broad range of
instructional technologies.  The language technology specialist
will provide leadership to engage the foreign language faculty of
the Ohio 5 schools in combining foreign language pedagogy and the
use of technology to teach foreign language and cultures.  This
position requires an energetic, highly motivated individual with
excellent organization, analytical and communication skills.
Success depends upon the candidate's ability to interact
creatively and collaboratively with a faculty of wide-ranging
skills and expertise in educational technology.  This position,
the first of two, will begin in January 1997 and continue through
June 1999 and will be based in Oberlin, Ohio.
 
The successful candidate will have a demonstrated commitment to
the teaching of language and culture, will also be thoroughly
familiar with the emerging teaching technology on both Mac and
DOS/Windows platforms and will hold at least the Master's degree
(but Ph.D. is preferred).
 
Specific duties include:
 
1) Advising the Ohio 5 faculty and administration on the short
and long-term technology possibilities for language instruction.
 
2) Conducting both short training sessions and longer workshops
in the use of multimedia technology and the development of
pedagogical applications of this technology.
 
3) Fostering an on-going exchange of views among language faculty
at the five institutions about teaching methods, instructional
materials and shared pedagogical problems and strategies.
 
4) Helping Ohio Five language faculty explore cross-platform
solutions to language pedagogy in order to foster more
collaborative work.
 
5) Training both the language learning center directors and one
or two faculty members at each Ohio 5 institution as language
technology mentors.
 
6) Helping Ohio Five language faculty to identify, select,
purchase and install hardware and software, and assisting faculty
in evaluating other externally developed materials (commercial
and non-commercial) for use in their programs.
 
7) Helping Ohio Five colleges explore how interactive
technologies can be used in language instruction for less
commonly taught languages on the five campuses.

Franklin Electronic Publishers is seeking lexicographers and
linguists for work in electronic publishing.  Of special interest
are candidates with very strong Italian skills.

Linguist/Lexicographer
 
Linguists at Franklin are involved both in product development
and in longer term projects aimed at representing linguistic
knowledge at the lexical level.  During product development the
Linguist supports Data Analysts and Editors when language-related
questions arise (particularly in connection with non-English
language databases).  Since many of Franklin's products are
bilingual and non-English (monolingual and bilingual)
dictionaries, an interest in lexicography is important.
 
One of the main ways Franklin adds value to its electronic
products is by supplying relevant data from linguistic databases
developed and maintained internally.  For example, morphological,
phonetic, and orthographic databases are undergoing constant
development, use, and improvement.  Linguists are responsible for
the design, development, and maintenance of these resources.
 
Job requirements:
 
M.A./M.S. or Ph.D. in Linguistics
Computer experience
Fluency in one or more foreign language
 
Also helpful:
 
UNIX experience
Computational linguistics experience
Lexicography experience
Native-like to native knowledge of Italian
