We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.

Blount's Glossographia attributes to Camden the derivation of cockney from
the alleged ancient name of the river Thames. But where is this etymology
recorded in Camden's work? Camden says nothing like this in Britannia or in
Remaines? If any reader can enlighten us we would appreciate it!

I'm a French student at university ( English master's dissertation). I
study the lore and language of school children. I need examples to
finish my corpus ( givses and keepses, spoonerism, tongue-twisters,
riddles, etc...). I would also appreciate any book references that
could help me.

Dear Colleagues,

I am in the process of collecting materials for my Ph.D. dissertation,
the topic of which is "The sociolinguistic aspects of the language of
the punk subculture - a Polish - English contrastive study". The
corpus of linguistic data will be based on Polish, English and
American fanzines (as a matter of fact I have found English language
materials rather difficult to obtain). I would be most grateful for
e-mailing any valuable hints, references (so far I have not found a
bibliography of relevant sources) as well as the names and addresses
of people who are concerned with this topic. Any personal comments
would also be appreciated. > >Thank you in advance for your

Does anybody know how vowels and glides are distinguished within a
feature geometry framework that does not use the feature Syllabic?
Thanks.
