Applications are sought for a linguist/applied linguist to
fill a position in the Department of Linguistics, Faculty of Arts.
 
Applicants should have completed a PhD, should have a broad background in
general linguistics, and the ability to teach and supervise theses in a
range of areas of linguistics[> applied and/or general linguistics] offered
by the department.  Candidates are sought who have abilities [> expertise]
in more than one of the following areas (which are given in alphabetical

Austronesian and/or Papuan linguistics; discourse analysis; 	first language

The Department of Linguistics
 
The Department of Linguistics offers a full undergraduate (including
honours) program in Linguistics.  Undergraduate majors are available in
general and applied linguistics.  The department offers honours preparation
in three streams--general, applied, and semantics/pragmatics.  The
department participates in the university-wide graduate program in
Linguistics, which offers the awards of: Graduate Certificate in Language
Teaching, Graduate Diplomas in General and Applied Linguistics, Master of
Letters in Applied Linguistics, Master of Arts (by research only or by
coursework and research), and PhD.  The graduate program has some 60
students.  All staff are active in research.  The department maintains a
well-equipped phonetics laboratory.
 
The traditional strength of the department has been in typology and
descriptive linguistics, with many postgraduate student writing grammars of
languages in the Australian region.  In the last few years it has expanded
its teaching and training in applied linguistics, in cooperation with other
sections of the university, and has been seeing increasing numbers of
students pursuing research in cross-cultural communication, discourse, and
(second) language learning.
 
The department staff and their main research interests are:

Professor R M W Dixon (research appointment): Australian descriptive and
comparative linguistics, grammatical typology, English syntax, Fijian,
Amazonian languages.
 
Dr Harold Koch, Historical-comparative, Australian linguistics, Indo-European.
 
Dr Anthony Liddicoat, Applied Linguistics, discourse analysis,
bilingualism, French linguistics, language policy.
 
Mr Robert Parbs, Academic English, TESOL, language testing.
 
Dr Karl Rensch, Dialectology, Polynesian languages, Romance linguistics.
 
Dr Timothy Shopen, Syntactic typology, language teaching methodology,
educational linguistics, semantics and pragmatics.
 
Dr Phil Rose, Phonetics, phonology, tone, Chinese linguistics, forensic
linguistics.
 
Professor Anna Wierzbicka, Semantics, pragmatics, cross-cultural communication.
 
Dr Xiaonong Zhu (research appointment) Instrumental phonetics, tone,
Chinese linguistics.
 
The Department includes further research-only staff employed on research
grants or attached as visiting fellows.
 
The Department belongs to the Faculty of Arts, where the following
languages are taught:  French, Italian, German, Russian, Latin, Greek
(Spanish is available by arrangement with the University of Canberra).  The
Department is also associated with the Faculty of Asian Studies, which
teaches: Japanese, Chinese, Korean, Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, Sanskrit,
Hindi and Arabic.  The University has strong departments of Anthropology,
Sociology, Psychology and Philosophy.  A sister Department of Linguistics
in the University [> university's] Research School of Pacific and Asian
Studies has a staff of five academics, who pursue research on Pacific
languages.  Applied Linguistics programs exist in the Asian Studies Faculty
(especially for Japanese), and some units in Applied Linguistics are taught
in the Department of Modern European Languages.
 
 
The Faculties
 
The Australian National University has six teaching faculties:  Arts, Asian
Studies, Economics and Commerce, Engineering and Information Technology,
Law, Science. The Arts Faculty is organised into 12 departments and offers
undergraduate and postgraduate degrees with specialisation in traditional
disciplines and a variety of cross-disciplinary fields.

The Department of Modern Languages  invites applications for a position
in linguistics at the rank of Assistant Professor, beginning on August 1,
1997, subject to final budgetary approval.  This is a  tenure-track
appointment.  The minimum salary at the Assistant Professor level
is $39,981.
 
The successful candidate should hold a Ph.D. in linguistics or a related
discipline with demonstrated scholarship in the form of publications.
S/he should have interest in at least two of the following fields:
syntax, pragmatics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics and
should be able to teach at the undergraduate level any of the following
languages: German, Italian, Japanese, Russian, or Spanish.  Interest in
technology-based learning and willingness to participate in
interdisciplinary projects are highly desirable.

The Department of English at the University of Southwestern
Louisiana (Universite' des Acadiens) has a tenure track opening
for an assistant professor in linguistics beginning August,
1997.  Specialization is open, but preference will be given to
candidates whose interests complement Ph.D. programs in
English, Cognitive Science, and/or Francophone Studies.  The
English Department has strong programs in folklore and
rhetoric, and the Francophone Studies program is the only one
of its kind in North America.  The Cognitive Science Program
combines the resources of many departments (Psychology,
Philosophy, Communicative Disorders) as well as the
university's internationally recognized Center for Advanced
Computer Studies and New Iberia Primate Research Center.
 
The Ph.D. is required and a record of effective teaching  is
