CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
10th Annual CUNY Conference on Human Sentence Processing
Including a Special Session on Acquisition and Adult Performance
Hosted by the University of Southern California
The 10th Annual CUNY (City University of New York) Conference on Human
Sentence Processing is soliciting abstracts for papers and posters
presenting theoretical, empirical and/or computational research on
human sentence processing. Abstracts will be reviewed anonymously and
will be considered for both the general conference sessions and for a
special session on the Relationship between Child Language Acquisition
and Adult Language Comprehension. Submission details are below and
are also included on our website: http://siva.usc.edu/~cuny97/
SPECIAL SESSION:
The special session on The Relationship between Child Language
Acquisition and Adult Language Comprehension will include
presentations by several invited speakers. Submitted abstracts will
also be considered for the session and will be evaluated both for the
quality of the research and the fit between the submitted abstract and
the invited papers. Special session abstracts that are not chosen for
the spoken session will be considered for a poster session held on the
same day as the special session talks.

WHAT TO SUBMIT:
Abstracts should be no more than 300 words in length, excluding
references. At the top of the abstract, please include your name,
affiliation, email address, and indicate whether your abstract is to
be considered for the general session or the special session. Also
indicate whether your abstract is submitted for consideration as a
PAPER ONLY, POSTER ONLY, or PAPER OR POSTER. The last category means
that you would be willing to present a poster if your abstract is not
included in the spoken sessions but is accepted for one of the poster
sessions. Please leave several blank lines between this information
and your title and abstract, so that we may remove this information
for anonymous abstract review.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE:
For consideration in the spoken paper sessions: November 15, 1996
(This deadline is REVISED because previous deadline conflicted with
several conferences and because some people did not receive the first CALL)
For consideration as a poster only: January 15, 1997
Abstracts submitted but not accepted for the paper sessions will
automatically be included in the submissions for poster sessions,
unless the abstract is marked PAPER ONLY.

We STRONGLY prefer email submissions. Email your submissions to
cuny97 at gizmo.usc.edu. Please use "Abstract" as your subject header.
If you are submitting more than one abstract, please email each
separately. You will receive an email acknowledgment for each
abstract you submit.

CONFERENCE DATES AND LOCATION:
The conference will be held on March 20-22, 1997.
The conference will be held at the Doubletree Guest Suites Hotel in
Santa Monica, CA. This hotel is about 6 blocks from the beach and is
near many stores and restaurants. Reservation information will be in
future postings.

THE SYNTAX AND SEMANTICS OF PREDICATION
The University of Texas at Austin

Abstracts are invited for 30 minute talks (with 10 additional minutes
for discussion) on any topic related to the syntax and/or semantics of
predication. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
-Syntactic conditions on predication: c-command, interactions
with theta roles, control, binding, coordination, ellipsis, the issue of
small clauses, etc.
-Types of predication: verbal/nonverbal, primary/secondary,
categorical/thetic, individual level/stage level, etc.
-Interpretation, scope, focus, presupposition, quantification,
discourse factors, etc.
-The role of heads: copular be, pronominal elements, predicate
clitics, etc.
-The syntax and semantics of resultatives
-Predication in the minimalist framework, GB, HPSG, LFG,
autolexical theory, etc.
-Predication in the noun phrase
Abstracts must be no more than one 8 1/2" by 11" page, single-spaced,
and in at least 12-point font (10-point for examples), with one inch
margins on all sides. One additional page with references, diagrams,
and data may be appended if necessary. All submissions must include
the following items:
-6 anonymous copies of the abstract
-1 3x5" card with name, affiliation, address, phone number, email
address, and title of paper
Deadline for receipt of abstracts is NOVEMBER 1, 1996. Send abstracts

Abstracts received after the deadline will not be considered. Fax
submissions will not be accepted. Instructions for email submissions
are available upon request. An individual may submit at most one
single and one co-authored paper. Accepted presenters will be
notified by mid-December, 1996. If presenters wish to have their
papers included in the conference proceedings, they must submit a
camera-ready copy by May 15, 1997. Proceedings will be published by
the Texas Linguistic Forum.
Preregistration for the conference is $15.00 (US) for students, $25.00
for nonstudents.
