machine translation software and other natural language processing

The R&D headquarters based in Tokyo, Japan are seeking a natural
language software developer for our machine translation project.
 
This job combines R&D and hands-on product development. Primary
responsibilities include performing technical research in
computational linguistics, building electronic dictionaries, and
implementing grammars for the parsing engine.
 
 
Qualifications:
 
Candidates for this position must be native speakers of English with
good communication skills in Japanese and a minimum of 2 years spent
living in Japan. Good linguistic knowledge, strong programming skills
in C++ and Prolog, and 2 years of experience in natural language
processing required. Translation experience a plus. MA/MS in
computational linguistics, theoretical linguistics, computer science,
artificial intelligence, or a related discipline preferred.

Director of the Rice Center for the Study of Languages
 
Rice University seeks a senior scholar in one of the disciplines of foreign
language learning and teaching to be Director of the newly established Rice
Center for the Study of Languages.  Specialized knowledge of and research
interest in at least one foreign language is required, as is a record of
proven excellence in teaching.  Fluency in a second foreign language is
highly desirable.  The Director of the Center will receive a tenured
appointment in the appropriate language and literature department, with a
joint appointment in Linguistics if applicable.  The Director will be
responsible for the overall operation of the Center for the Study of
Languages, including enhancing introductory language instruction, creating a
viable FLAC program, and, with the assistance of an assistant director to be
hired later, developing electronic means of instruction.  The Director will
report directly to the Dean of Humanities.  A detailed report of the Dean's

The Linguistics Program in cooperation with the Department of Languages and
Literature at the University of Utah seeks a Visiting Associate or Full
Professor with expertise in ESL program design to create a new, innovative
credit-bearing undergraduate course of study in ESL.  Ideally, this
individual would be in residence on our campus for the Winter and Spring
quarters (early January to early June) of 1997 and make a commitment to
returning to our campus periodically over the next two years (AYs 1997-98
and 1998-99) to consult and assist in assessing the program.
 
The visiting faculty member would be working with faculty in Linguistics
and Languages & Literature whose areas of teaching/research include ESL, FL
and Bilingual Education to coordinate the new curriculum with our existing
credit and non-credit bearing courses in ESL.  The development of new
credit-bearing ESL courses is part of a restructuring of the Linguistics
Program and Department of Languages and Literature to encompass all facets
of second language learning and literacy, including the training of ESL/EFL
and other L2 teachers at the undergraduate and graduate levels, the
creation of Bilingual Education/ESL endorsement programs in collaboration
with the Graduate School of Education, the development of an International
Teaching Assistant training program, the integration of ESL/EFL and other
L2 instruction across the curriculum, and the development of community
outreach programs that support multilingualism and multiculturalism in the
public schools.
