*** Research Position at Motorola Corporate Research Laboratories ***

Motorola, Inc. has an opening for an individual to research and
develop spoken language systems at the Motorola Corporate Research
Center in Schaumburg, Illinois. This researcher will be a member of an
interdisciplinary team exploring the integration of speech
recognition, speech synthesis, and natural language processing
technologies for product applications of man-machine
communications. The duties of the position include applied research,
software development, and transfer of developed technologies to
product groups.  Innovation in research and applications of technology
is the standard for all members of the team.

Experience in natural language processing is required. In particular
concentration in developing spoken language parsers, grammars for
spoken language, dialogue models, or integrated spoken language
applications is desired. A Ph.D., or direct experience in one of these
areas, is desired.  Strong candidates with Masters degree will also be
considered. Programming skills in C++ and object oriented programming
are required.

Lecturer or Assistant Professor, effective 1 January 1997, subject to

			SYNTAX POSITION

The Department of Linguistics at Northwestern University announces a
full-time tenure-track position in syntax at the assistant professor
level, pending final approval.  The starting date for the position is
September 1, 1997.

Candidates must hold a Ph.D. in linguistics or a related field by the
starting date of the position.  We are seeking candidates with a
primary specialization in syntax, as well as additional expertise in
one or more of the following areas: language typology, formal
semantics, quantitative sociolinguistics, and bilingualism.
Preference will be given to candidates with publications beyond the
dissertation and teaching skills of demonstrably high quality.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications.
