                     Chair in Linguistics
 
Applications are invited for a Chair in Linguistics in the Linguistics
Department of the School of English and Linguistics.  The successful
candidate will be expected to provide academic leadership within the
Linguistics Department. He/she will have the opportunity to be Head of
the Linguistics department but will not be expected to assume this
position immediately.
 
The appointment will be tenable from a mutually agreeable date, but it
is expected that the successful candidate will be in post by
September, 1997. Salary will be negotiable within the professorial
range.

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at California State
University announces the following openings.
 
California SU, Los Angeles 5151 State Univ Dr, Los Angeles CA 90032
    Dept Mod Langs & Lit
 
Tenure-track position in Spanish, fall 97; Assist or Assoc.  PhD/ABD,
native/near native Spanish and fluent English.  Doctorate required for
tenure.  Spanish-American and Peninsular generalist.  Preference to
candidates with ability to teach contemporary Spanish and 19th-century
Spanish-American literature.  Ability to teach Spanish-American poetry
of all periods and an introductory literary theory course desirable.
Some preparation in applied Hispanic linguistics also an asset.
Evidence of quality teaching and research potential; commitment to
creative teaching strategies at all levels.  Letter of application,
CV, transcripts, and 3 letters of recommendation to Dr. Joseph
Chrzanowski, Chair.  Complete dossiers received prior to Dec. 4

Native or near-native proficiency in Chinese; fluent English.  Ability
to teach all levels of language as well as courses in culture,
business Chinese, and the history of the Chinese language.  Evidence
of quality teaching and research potential; commitment to creative
teaching strategies; willingness to contribute to program development.
Ability to teach a second Asian language is highly desirable.  Letter
of application, CV, transcripts, and 3 letters of recommendation to
Dr. Joseph Chrzanowski, Chair. Complete dossiers received prior to
