CALL FOR WORKSHOP PROPOSALS
EPIA'97
8th Portuguese Conference on Artificial Intelligence
Coimbra, Portugal
October 6-9, 1997
Under the auspices of the
Portuguese Association for Artificial Intelligence
The EPIA'97 Program Committee invites proposals for the Workshop
Program as part of the 8th Portuguese Conference on Artificial
Intelligence.
Each EPIA'97 workshop will provide an informal setting where
researchers and practitioners will have the oportunity to meet
and discuss currently relevant specific topics of AI research
and applications. Members from all segments of the AI community
and related fields are invited to submit proposals for review.
The workshops will be held in the period of October 7-8 and
will run in paralell with the main conference. To encourage
interaction and a broad exchange of ideas, the workshops will
be kept small, under 30 participants. Attendance should be
preferably limited to active participants only. Workshops
are intended to be genuinely interactive events, so ample time
must be allowed for general discussion, although the format of
workshop presentations will be determined by the organizing
comitee of the workshop. Workshops will typically be one full day
in legth, although half-day and two-day proposals will be
considered. Attendees at workshops will be required to register
for the main EPIA'97 conference.
REQUIREMENTS FOR SUBMISSION
Proposals for workshops should be about two (2) pages in
length, and should contain:
- A workshop title.
- A brief technical description of the workshop, identifying
the specific issues on wich the workshop will focus.
- A brief explanation of why the workshop is of particular
interest at this time.
- A brief description of the workshop format, regarding the
mix of paper presentations, invited talks, and/or panels.
- The names, postal addresses, phone numbers, and e-mail
addresses of the Organizing Comitee. This comitee should
consist of at least two people knowledgeable in the
technical issues to be addressed by the workshop.
- An indication of a likely schedule and time involved and,
if possible, a list of potential attendees.
Workshop proposals should be submitted by electronic mail to
the EPIA'97-Workshops Submission Address (see below) in plain
ASCII text as soon as possible, but no later than December 9,
1996. Organizers will be notified of the comitee's decision no
later than January 13, 1997.
Organizers of accepted workshops will be responsible for:
- Producing a Call for Participation in the workshop by
January 20, 1997. The call must make it clear that the
workshop is part of the EPIA'97 conference. It should
also note that all workshop participants must register
for the EPIA'97 conference and that the number of
participants is strictly limited. Finnaly, it should
also make clear the process by wich the Organizing
Comitee will select the participants.
- Selecting participants. Organizers decide workshop
attendance on the basis of submissions due April 28,
1997. Authors of accepted submissions must be notified
by May 30, 1997.
- Coordinating the production of the workshop working
notes. EPIA can reproduce copies of the working notes,
up to a total of 200 pages by participant, if
materials are received by July 14, 1997.
All workshop participants must register for the EPIA'97
conference. To cover costs, there will be an extra fee for
attending each workshop. The Workshop Chair will provide
logistical support and a meeting place for each workshop.
Workshop date and time will be determined in conjunction
with the organizers.

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS
10th Annual CUNY Conference on Human Sentence Processing
Including a Special Session on Acquisition and Adult Performance
Hosted by the University of Southern California
The 10th Annual CUNY Conference on Human Sentence Processing is
soliciting abstracts for papers and posters presenting theoretical,
empirical and/or computational research on human sentence processing.
Abstracts will be reviewed anonymously and will be considered for both
the general conference sessions and for a special session on the
Relationship between Child Language Acquisition and Adult Language
Comprehension. Submission details are below and are also included on

SPECIAL SESSION:
The special session on The Relationship between Child Language
Acquisition and Adult Language Comprehension will include
presentations by several invited speakers. Submitted abstracts will
also be considered for the session and will be evaluated both for the
quality of the research and the fit between the submitted abstract and
the invited papers. Special session abstracts that are not chosen for
the spoken session will be considered for a poster session held on the
same day as the special session talks.

WHAT TO SUBMIT:
Abstracts should be no more than 300 words in length, excluding
references. At the top of the abstract, please include your name,
affiliation, email address, and indicate whether your abstract is to
be considered for the general session or the special session. Also
indicate whether your abstract is submitted for consideration as a
PAPER ONLY, POSTER ONLY, or PAPER OR POSTER. The last category means
that you would be willing to present a poster if your abstract is not
included in the spoken sessions but is accepted for one of the poster
sessions. Please leave several blank lines between this information
and your title and abstract, so that we may remove this information
for anonymous abstract review.
SUBMISSION DEADLINE:
For consideration in the spoken paper sessions: November 1, 1996
For consideration as a poster only: January 15, 1997
Abstracts submitted but not accepted for the paper sessions will
automatically be included in the submissions for poster sessions,
unless the abstract is marked PAPER ONLY.

CONFERENCE DATES AND LOCATION:
The conference will be held on March 20-22, 1997.
The conference will be held at the Doubletree Guest Suites Hotel in
Santa Monica, CA. This hotel is about 6 blocks from the beach and is
near many stores and restaurants. Reservation information will be in
future postings.
CONFERENCE SCHEDULE/REGISTRATION INFORMATION:
