The Language Center is inviting 10 native-speaker instructors of
freshman English conversation to be assigned to classes of not more
than 25 students for the spring semester of 1997 on a one-year
contract renewable to a two-year one upon satisfactory completion of
the initial contract.  The minimum teaching load per week is 15 hours.
The minimum annual salary is KW 19,200,000 for MA/TESL. Independent
housing with cooking, bathing,heating, and airconditiong facilities.
University hospital provides medical care based on the Korean medical
insurance system. Extra compensation for extra teaching hours during

Position in English Language/Linguistics.  Assistant or Associate
Professor, tenure-track position beginning in September 1997.
The salary is competitive.  Applicants should provide evidence of
effective teaching and show potential for strong scholarship.  We
have a strong linguistics component in our English studies and
English education programs and are seeking candidates who can
teach linguistic theory and its applications effectively in this
context.  Candidates must be able to teach introductory and
advanced courses in at least two areas, such as history of
English, generative grammar, sociolinguistics, language and
gender, or textual analysis.  Successful candidates will be
expected to contribute to the department's other programs in
literature, education, or writing.
 
We seek candidates who will provide cultural and experiential
diversity to the department.  We will make a special effort to
recruit candidates from under-represented groups and will
consider creative hiring arrangements, such as shared
appointments.  We urge people of color, women, Vietnam era and

                     POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
 
          Subject to funding, the Linguistics Department of
     Montclair State University expects to have two tenure-
     track openings, one at the assistant level and one with
     rank open, for Applied Linguists for the Fall 1997
     semester.  Montclair is a New Jersey State teaching
     university located about 15 miles outside of New York
     City.  Candidates for these positions should have a
     primary specialization in one of the following areas of
     Applied Linguistics and a strong secondary
     specialization in another:  Second Language
     Acquisition, Language Education, Literacy,
     Bilingualism, Discourse Analysis, Sociology of
     Language, and American Sign Language.  Applicants with
     professional experience in contexts where linguistic
     theory is applied are especially encouraged to apply.
     A commitment to undergraduate and graduate education is
     essential.  Responsibilities:  undergraduate and
     graduate teaching in a variety of areas of applied
     linguistics, student advisement, scholarly research,
     and committee assignments.  Qualifications:  Ph.D. in
     Linguistics, university teaching experience and a
     demonstrated record of scholarly research.  Application
     deadline is November 1, 1996 but applications will be
