Subject:  definition of T-unit

I'm Dalia Hammoud from Egypt. My M.A. is on Lexical Cohesion. It is a
comparative study on two grades and their writing proficiency. I found
many linguists use T-unit in their analysis of their corpus. My
question is: "Why do they use T-unit rather than sentences in their
analyses? Is it more reliable? Are there any articles which define
this term 'T-unit', or tackle it in more detail? Please reply as soon
as possible.  It is EXTREMELY URGENT. Thanks in advance.

Subject:  suppletive verbs

I apologize for cluttering the list with my own requests. I am
working on suppletion in verb inflection, and as things have
developed right now, I need a fast influx of data.

I have set up a questionnaire at

I am looking mainly for data from indigenous languages of South
America, as well as the Austronesian, Austro-Asiatic and Papuan
families. However, data from any other languages is also very
welcome.

I plan to make my suppletive database available on the web
as soon as I clean it up. If there is enough interest, I will
also post a summary to the list.

Subject:  Digital/Analog recorders


I am in the market for a new, high-quality tape recorder for
fieldwork. I have been satisfied with the recording quality of an
analog Marantz machine with a good external microphone, but (1) it is
big and clunky; and (2) digitizing analog tapes is extremely
time-consuming.  For this reason, I am considering a DAT machine.

Any words on the pros and cons of DAT recorders (and recordings) would
be most appreciated, considering issues such as the quality and
reliability of the machine, and the convertability, price, and
long-term archiving potential of the tapes.

And if I still go for an analog recorder, does anyone have
recommendations for small recorders other than the Sony Professional,
about which I have already heard good things?
