Subjects, Expletives, and the EPP

According to the classical Extended Projection Principle (EPP) every
sentence has the structure [NP I VP]. Among the issues that the workshop =
is
intended to shed new light on are the following:
- Is the EPP universal?
- Can the EPP be derived from more fundamental principles (from theta
theory, case theory, or predication theory)? The clearest proof that it
cannot be derived from theta theory is the existence of expletive subjects.
This may also be construed as an argument against deriving the EPP from
predication theory. The fact that some expletive elements look distinctly
non-nominal and do not induce agreement can be construed as an argument
against deriving the EPP from Case theory.
- What is the exact structural position of NP in [NP I VP]? Is it the same
in all languages?
- Is the EPP one thing, or several? For instance, in V2 languages the
highest spec-position must be filled by some category or other. Is this
unrelated to the EPP?
- How much cross-linguistic variation is there regarding how the EPP is
satisfied? We know that it can be satisfied by a thematic subject or an
expletive pronoun. In some languages (Icelandic is a well-studied case) it
can be satisfied by an oblique NP in certain constructions. In some
languages ('topic-oriented languages') it can, apparently, be satisfied by
an object or PP. Recently it has been claimed that the EPP can be satisfied
in some languages by agreement morphology on the verb moved to I. There are
suggestions to the effect that VP-movement can satisfy the EPP in some
languages/constructions. It has even been claimed that just V-movement
(without agreement morphology) can satisfy the EPP, in some languages.
- How many different types of expletives are there? Do phonetically null
expletives exist? Are there 'expletive topics'? Is the expletive always a
nominal category?

BELGIAN FRANCOPHONE LITERATURE
26-27 September 1997
UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH
The "Centre de Recherches Francophones Belges" of the University of Edinburgh
provides the opportunity to exchange ideas and to address issues dealing with
Belgian culture, literature and the arts.
The object of our two-day conference will be to continue promoting
Francophone Belgian literature through the discussion of the oeuvre of Jean
Muno. The debate need not be restricted to Jean Muno but can also encompass
a wide variety of topics which are of interest to the reader of Muno and to
Muno himself, such as linguistics, stylistics, semiology, magic realism,
humour, etc. as well as theoretical and practical studies of modern
Francophone literature.

2) Jacques De Decker (literary critic, writer, member of the "Academie Royale
de Langue et de Litterature Francaises", lecturer at the Royal Conservatory
of Arts, Belgium)

5) Barbara Van der Eecken (University of Edinburgh)
Those wishing to present a paper (30 minute presentation with 10 additional
minutes for discussion) on any topic related to La Francophonie are requested
to send a 1-page abstract along with a brief personal data sheet giving the
presenter's name, position and affiliation, as soon as possible (extension of
deadline until 30th April). The abstract can helpfully give a description of
the theoretical framework, the method, hypotheses and findings to be
presented in the paper.

The University of Paris 7 and CNRS organize the second Syntax and
Semantics Conference in Paris. CSSP conferences aim at promoting
discussion between competing theories and formalisms. Papers are
accepted in English and French. The meeting will consist of a general
session and a thematic one. Papers are invited for both sessions.
