Dear Colleagues,
I am looking for general materials related to India's contribution to the
study of language. So far I have found one book carrying the above-mentioned
title, namely "The Word and the World : India's contribution to ..." by the
late Prof. B. K. Matilal. Is this  book accessible on the net in any
readable form(abstract, or summary, etc., etc.)? I would be extremely
grateful for any other valuable links to relevant websites.

Subject:  Sports commentators' language

Dear linguists,
A friend of mine is doing a mini-scale project on sports commentators'
language - mainly basketball commentators (eg. NBA). This is a
comparative work concerning examples in Polish and English. Not being an
expert in this field I would like to ask you about any vocabulary
pertaining to the topic but which is not usually included in any
statistics but is rather used during live commentary.
It seems to me that English is much more richer in this respect. For
example we have only one expression in Polish for 'shot' (rzut) whereas
in English there are a couple of them. Some others are borrowings from
English. Therefore, I'm counting for reply from all those keen on sports
;)
