COMPUTER SCIENTIST
specializing in databases
The Munich AVG 2.0 project develops a flexible databank for
cross-linguistic reference grammars, descriptions of natural languages
optimized for cross-linguistic queries. The team consists of the PI,
two more linguists and a student assistant. The current format of the
databank combines a deductive database written in Prolog with a Java
surface. The successful candidate will revise and expand this core
implementation according to the needs of the prospective users. He
should have a master's degree or diploma in computer science, if
possible in combination with linguistics or computational linguistics,
and a specialization in databases. He should be fluent in Windows NT,

The project is located at the University of Munich, a very attractive
place in Southern Germany featuring lots of cultural events and an
open atmosphere.
This job was originally offered as half-time job for up to two years,
but terms are negotiable, so a 6 to 9 month full employment (salary:
BAT2a (DM 60000-75000 per annum) would as well be possible, or a
combination of the two (full job first, part-time subsequently).

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT FOR LINGUISTS
The Reasoning Group at ETS will offer interviews to qualified
linguists at LSA's meeting in New York in January. Applications for
work in the Verbal Group will also be accepted at the meeting. A
sign-up sheet for personal interviews will be available in the Job
Center.
ETS offers competitive salary and benefits. Currently, temporary
positions only are available in the Reasoning group. These are
normally practical only for people living within a reasonably close
commuting distance from Princeton, NJ. Temporary positions often lead
to regular staff or term-of-contract positions.
Responsibilities of examiner positions include writing and reviewing
reasoning or verbal questions for inclusion in tests for entry into
graduate and professional schools. Minimum qualifications for
regular-staff positions include a master's degree and approximately 4
years' relevant work experience, or an equivalent combination of
education and experience. Successful candidates for examiner positions
in recent years have completed their doctorates.
Desirable qualifications for the Reasoning Group include coursework or
teaching experience in any or all of the following areas: informal and
formal logic, syntax, semantics, sociolinguistics, generative
phonology, and cognitive psychology. Linguists and logicians
specializing in other areas who have outstanding writing skills are
encouraged to apply, as are linguists with extensive teaching
experience in composition or rhetoric. College teaching experience
and a broad general background of knowledge are desirable. There are
currently seven linguists working in the Reasoning Group, with
backgrounds in syntax, semantics, phonology, and
sociolinguistics. Other professional staff in the Reasoning Group have
backgrounds in logic, philosophy, statistics, the classics, and
foreign languages. Linguists are also employed in other groups at ETS.
Resumes sent to the Reasoning Group are forwarded, when appropriate,
to other work groups within ETS. Two linguists are employed in the
Verbal Group, and several are employed in the ESL Group.
Precise and fluent use of the English language and meticulous
attention to detail are required for these positions. The ability to
accept exacting criticism of one's writing and to revise appropriately
is one of the most important prerequisites for success in the
Reasoning and Verbal Groups.
A written work sample will be administered in the Palace Room at the
Hyatt Hotel starting at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, January 9 and on
Saturday, January 10, starting at 5:30 p.m. The work sample normally
takes two and a half hours to complete. Candidates wishing to receive
serious consideration for a position should be prepared to take either
the Verbal or Reasoning work sample at one of the listed times.
Candidates interested in both departments are invited to take both
work samples; this will require the candidates' coming to both the
Friday and Saturday administrations.
