The 1997 annual meeting of the American Association for the
Advancement of Science is in Seattle, from Thursday, Feb. 13, to
Tuesday, Feb. 18. Here's a list of events for linguists:

1. OFFICIAL MEETING OF SECTION Z, LINGUISTICS & LANGUAGE SCIENCES
    Fri. Feb. 14, 7:30-10:30 P.M., Convention Center 307.

But since the linguistics-oriented sessions are all scheduled later,
most linguists won't yet be at the Seattle meeting by Friday; so the
section meeting on Friday will be a formality at which we expect to
conduct little or no section business. Instead, we will go through our
main agenda -- especially planning for the 1998 AAAS meeting in
Philadelphia, but also other section business -- at a second meeting:

2. SECTION Z FUTURE-PLANNING MEETNG
Sat. Feb. 16, 8:00-11:00 P.M., Sheraton Hotel, Aspen Room.

Then there will be three three-hour sessions of particular
interest to linguists:

a. LEARNING TO READ: EDUCATIONAL PRACTICE IN LIGHT OF LINGUISTIC
    AND PSYCHOLINGUISTIC EVIDENCE
(Speakers: Marilyn J. Adams, Mark S. Seidenberg, David Pesetsky,
Barbara R. Foorman, and Maggie Bruck.)
Sun. Feb. 16, 2:30-5:30 (room to be announced at the conference).

b. THE PACIFIC NORTHWEST AS A LINGUSTIC AND CULTURAL AREA
(Speakers: Nancy J. Turner, William R. Seaburg, Emmon Bach,
William J. Poser, and M. Dale Kinkade.)
Mon. Feb. 17, 9:30-12:00 (room to be announced at the conference).

c. EXPRESSING MEANING THROUGH WORD STRUCTURE AND THROUGH SYNTAX
(Speakers: Arnold M. Zwicky, Susan Steele, Rolf R. Noyer,
Jerrold M. Sadock, and Stephen R. Anderson.)
Mon. Feb. 17, 3:00-6:00 (room to be announced at the conference).

We hope to see many linguists at our section meetings and at the
sessions...and as new members of the AAAS, so that we can continue to
increase the visibility of linguistics in the organization!
